What kind of game is The Expanse: Osiris Reborn?
Owlcat Games describes The Expanse: Osiris Reborn as a third-person sci-fi action RPG. Steam categorizes it as a single-player action RPG. You customize a captain who may be an Earther, Martian, or Belter, assemble a specialist crew, and command a ship called the Gemini.
The game is set in the wider Expanse universe, known through both the novels and television series. Its setting includes human settlements across Luna, Mars, and the Asteroid Belt; the game’s descriptions specifically name Ganymede, Ceres, Mars, and Luna, alongside ruined habitats and political strongholds. The announced premise concerns the game’s own protagonist and crew; the available descriptions do not establish that it retells the books’ or show’s main story.
What is the story?
The protagonist and their identical twin, J, join Pinkwater Security. During shore leave on Eros, a massacre leaves the pair separated from friends and colleagues. The protagonist escapes aboard an experimental enemy ship, and the station crisis develops into a conspiracy and a pursuit by a powerful enemy. This is the published, spoiler-light setup; further plot turns have not been established in the available official descriptions.

The crew introduced so far
- J: The protagonist’s twin, who joins Pinkwater Security alongside them.
- Zafar: A mechanic who helps guide the early mission; he appeared in the beta preview.
- Regina: A networker who can help find allies and provide ranged support.
- Teo: The ship’s medic aboard the Gemini.
- Michael: A mercenary associated with a competing outfit.
The descriptions introduce Zafar in the early mission and present Regina, Teo, and Michael as potential members of the wider crew. They do not confirm that every character is available at the same point in the story.
How does gameplay work?
The announced combat is third-person and built around taking cover, using abilities, and coordinating with companions. Two companions can accompany the player in the field. Other crew members can assist remotely, for example by disabling systems or drawing enemy attention, and the player can issue real-time commands.

Weapons, gadgets, and combat systems
A March 2026 beta preview showed shotguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, pistols, and submachine guns, as well as destructible cover and grenades. Demonstrated gadgets included a tactical scanner and small drones. An engine-equipped grenade was presented for zero-gravity combat. The Exploits system lets companions take advantage of combat openings to attack groups of enemies.
These are announced systems and beta-preview details, not a description of a reviewed final build. The available material does not establish how every weapon or ability will work across the full game.

Choices and companion relationships
Owlcat says mission choices can have long-lasting consequences, and the Steam description says companion relationships can improve or deteriorate in response to the player’s choices and leadership. These are announced design features; their full range and specific outcomes have not been detailed.
What did the beta include?
Owlcat said the beta, made available to eligible Founders on April 22, 2026, contained a full early-game mission. It showcased combat, skill progression, voiced dialogue, and cut-scenes. The developer estimated a completion time of one to two hours, depending on play style, and cautioned that beta performance could vary by hardware and might not reflect the final game.

Beta access was announced for people who purchased Miller’s Pack or the Collector’s Edition. That access was separate from the planned full release. The available information does not establish the Collector’s Edition’s physical contents.

There is no announced launch day. Owlcat’s March 26, 2026 announcement gives a spring 2027 release window, while Steam currently lists Q2 2027. Both point to a planned window rather than a confirmed date.
