Spoiler warning: this article reveals the final boss sequence and the ending routes of Code Vein.

There is no single final boss in Code Vein. It depends on which ending you trigger. On the bad ending route, the final boss is Skull King. On the normal and good ending routes, Skull King is still fought, but Virgin Born follows him and is the last boss you face.

Final boss by ending route

Ending route Bosses in the final chapter, in order Final boss
Bad ending Skull King Skull King. The game moves to the credits after this fight.
Normal ending Skull King, then Virgin Born Virgin Born
Good ending Skull King, then Virgin Born Virgin Born

The normal and good routes share the same two-boss ending sequence. The GameFAQs walkthrough also describes extra post-battle steps in some good-ending variations. Those steps do not change which boss is last.

Why the answer changes with the route

The final chapter branches after Skull King. On the bad ending route, the fight with Skull King is the end of the story, and the walkthrough has the player proceed directly to the credits. Every other ending route adds Virgin Born as a second, sequential encounter.

  • Unite to survive: featuring a story driven connected dungeon experience, dive into the world of code vein. Create your own character and choose your partner as you venture out into a world of destruction, overrun by the Lost. Use your combined strength to coordinate your approach and defend each other from surprise attacks or overpowered enemies using your Blood veil and various weapons. Change the feel of the game depending on which partner you choose, each with their own combat style and background story.
  • beneath the veil: experience the power of Blood as you use unique Blood veils to drain your enemies to enhance your abilities. Using "gifts" Powered by enemy Blood, players can increase their strength, weaken enemies, and Utilise new weapon abilities and overpowered attacks.
  • great challenge brings greater rewards: take on the Lost as you explore the malefic world of code vein. Choose from a myriad of weapons such as bayonets, axes and Spears, to accommodate your favourite battle style. Apply strategy in your attacks through partnered coordination and Blood veil enhancements, ready to bring down the most threatening enemies.

This is the source of most confusion. A player who reaches the bad ending has beaten the final boss of that route but never fights Virgin Born, so for that player Skull King is the answer. A player who reaches the normal or good ending fights Skull King too, but the last fight is against Virgin Born. Neither answer is wrong for the route it describes, which is why a single name does not work as a universal answer.

GameFAQs final-chapter walkthrough

The main evidence for the route-by-route sequence is the GameFAQs walkthrough for the final chapter, “Gaol of the Stagnant Blood”, last updated February 10, 2020. It states that the bad ending has one boss, that the other routes have two bosses in sequence, and that Virgin Born is the final boss on the normal and good endings. Because the boss sequence is fixed game content, the age of the walkthrough does not affect the answer.

Code Vein Wiki

The Code Vein Wiki page for Gaol of the Stagnant Blood describes the same conditional sequence, calling Skull King the final boss and Virgin Born the true final boss when the relevant conditions are met. It is a community-edited wiki, so treat it as corroboration for the walkthrough rather than a primary source.

Official Bandai Namco pages

The Bandai Namco Studios product page for Code Vein confirms the game’s identity and lists it as a 2019 release. It does not name the final bosses or describe the ending routes, so it is useful for context but not for the answer itself.

Which boss to expect

  • Bad ending: Skull King is your last boss, and the credits follow his defeat.
  • Normal or good ending: Skull King comes first, and Virgin Born is the final boss you fight before the ending.

If you want to face the game’s last boss, you must reach the normal or good ending. The bad ending does not include Virgin Born.
