For the Worthy is a special world seed in Terraria that makes a newly generated world harder than the mode you select. Type for the worthy into the seed field when creating a world, and the seed raises that world’s difficulty by one level and adds further challenges.

How to start a For the Worthy world

The seed only applies when a world is generated, so you need to create a new world rather than load an existing save.

  1. From the title screen, open the option for creating a new world.
  2. In the world creation settings, find the seed field. The official Terraria Wiki describes For the Worthy as entered in that field, and the seed menu also lists it as a selectable special seed. Exact labels and menu order can differ between platforms and versions, so follow what your copy of the game shows.
  3. Type for the worthy. Since version 1.4.4, fortheworthy (no spaces) also works as an alias.
  4. If the matching special seed appears in the seed menu, select it, then finish creating the world.

How much harder the world becomes

The seed moves each base difficulty up one tier. The official wiki gives two documented examples, shown below.

Base difficulty selected Effective difficulty in a For the Worthy world
Classic Behaves as Expert
Expert Behaves as Master
Master Not stated by the official Terraria Wiki

Because the wiki’s examples stop at Expert, do not assume a higher tier for Master worlds without checking current notes.

Mechanics that change beyond difficulty

Difficulty is not the only change. The official wiki lists these examples, which are not a complete list of every altered mechanic:

  • The Star Cannon and Super Star Shooter deal 90% of their usual damage and have 10% longer use time.
  • Players cannot see wires and related objects until Skeletron has been defeated.

The 1.4.4 enemy damage change

Enemy damage is the most significant detail to get right when comparing versions. The official wiki’s 1.4.4 notes say the 33.33% enemy damage increase applies only to For the Worthy worlds created on Master difficulty. Before that update it applied at every difficulty. If you are following an older guide or video, check which version it describes before judging how hard the seed is.

Version and platform notes

According to the official wiki’s version history, For the Worthy was introduced in Desktop 1.4.0.3 and changed again in Desktop 1.4.4. Its pages list the seed as applicable to Desktop, Console, and Mobile, but the wiki does not confirm identical current behavior or update timing on every platform. For platform-specific steps, check the in-game seed menu and that platform’s release notes.

The in-game description

The seed menu presents this text:

“Are you Worthy? This is a world of no mercy. Forget what you know and sharpen your skills, lest you be weighed, measured, and found wanting…”

Do you need to buy anything extra?

No. The seed is a built-in feature of Terraria and does not require a separate item. You do need a copy of Terraria; the official Terraria website has a store page for the game.

What the evidence does not show

No independent statistics or studies about For the Worthy, such as how many players complete these worlds, were found. The 33.33% figure is a game rule documented in the official wiki’s 1.4.4 notes, not a measured player result.
