Gaming is still expanding, but unevenly. Newzoo forecasts 2026 global games revenue of $213.9 billion, up 6.1% year over year, and its platform split puts more than half of that total on mobile. PC and console follow different paths. The larger shift over the next several years is in how games are distributed, paid for, and made: cloud access, subscriptions, live services, creator-made content, and AI-assisted development are the forces industry outlooks name most often. These are trends, not settled outcomes. The sections below separate the figures you can cite from the directions that remain open.
The 2026 picture by platform
Newzoo’s platform forecasts for 2026 add up to its global figure: $121.1 billion for mobile, $46.9 billion for console, and $45.9 billion for PC. These are Newzoo estimates, not audited totals or guarantees. Other sources measure different slices of the market, so the table below places each figure beside its scope rather than treating them as interchangeable.
| Platform | Newzoo 2026 forecast | Other signal (2025 unless noted) | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile | $121.1 billion | Sensor Tower: mobile game revenue rose 1% to $82 billion despite slower download growth (report dated February 26, 2026) | The largest platform by Newzoo’s measure. Growth increasingly depends on engagement and spending by players already in games, not only on new downloads. |
| PC | $45.9 billion | Sensor Tower: PC and console revenue combined rose 13%; PC and console downloads rose 7% and releases rose 8.4% | Sensor Tower reports PC and console together, so this evidence cannot isolate PC. Circana’s outlook flags consumer shifts toward PC and mobile. |
| Console | $46.9 billion | Circana: U.S. consumer spending on video game hardware, content, and accessories reached $60.7 billion, up 1.4% from 2024 | Hardware pricing is the variable Circana identifies as a risk (see the affordability section below). The Circana figure covers the U.S. only, not global console spending. |
Five forces shaping the next phase
Industry outlooks converge on a short list of drivers. Each has evidence behind it as a direction, but none has a measured end state yet.
Platform convergence: cloud and cross-platform play
BCG’s Video Gaming Report 2026 argues that cloud gaming is pushing the industry toward a platform-agnostic future: “Cloud gaming will push gaming toward a platform-agnostic future.” That is BCG’s characterization of a trend, not a measured adoption result. Newzoo adds a counterweight, cautioning that a strategy that works on one platform may not translate to another. Convergence is a direction for the industry. It does not mean a phone, a PC, and a console will become interchangeable for players, and the evidence does not establish how far cloud play will grow.

Subscriptions and launch-price sensitivity
Circana’s 2026 Future of Video Games survey asked players how they would respond to rising costs. 38% said they would buy fewer full-price games at launch, and 34% said they would wait longer for sales. These are stated intentions from a survey, not observed purchases. They point to price sensitivity at launch. Whether that sends players toward subscriptions, toward discounts, or somewhere else is not established by this evidence.
Live services and engagement on mobile
Sensor Tower’s 2025 data shows mobile revenue up 1% to $82 billion while download growth slowed. Its report describes live operations, in-game events, and IP collaborations as the main tools for retention and monetization as those approaches mature. This points to mobile value increasingly coming from keeping existing players spending. Acquisition has not stopped: Sensor Tower estimates 52 billion game downloads across mobile, PC, and console in 2025, and 95,000 mobile game downloads per minute. Acquisition is simply no longer the only growth lever.
Generative AI and creator-made content
BCG lists generative AI, user-generated content, and creator economies among the forces it expects to reshape the industry. The evidence supports them as trends identified in an industry outlook. It does not establish their commercial impact. How much revenue AI tools will generate or displace, and how far creator content will feed into full-price games, remain open questions.

Development tools and who builds games
GDC’s 2026 State of the Game Industry survey found that 42% of surveyed developers primarily used Unreal Engine and 30% primarily used Unity. The engine question was asked only of developers, so it describes what makers use rather than what players see. GDC also notes that changes in survey composition make some year-over-year comparisons difficult, so read any shift in these shares as directional. The survey does not connect engine choice to platform strategy.
Audience growth and spending pressure
Player time and player spending are different questions, and the evidence answers them differently.
More time from existing players
BCG’s Global Gaming Survey, which covered approximately 3,000 gamers, found that around 55% had increased their gaming time in the preceding six months. This is a self-reported survey result, not a measure of total hours across the market. Newzoo’s regional view adds that emerging regions are adding players, while the largest economies still account for much of consumer spending. Player growth and spending growth are therefore not located in the same markets.

Affordability as a constraint
Circana’s February 2026 outlook raises cost pressure on hardware as a risk to the market. Mat Piscatella, video games industry advisor at Circana, said on February 11, 2026: “The 2026 U.S. video game market brings great opportunity — and risk.” Circana’s U.S. data cannot tell you how the same pressure will play out in other countries, and Newzoo’s emerging-market growth is not priced the same way as the large markets where most spending sits.

| Source | Figure | Scope | Period | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Newzoo | $213.9 billion | Global games revenue | 2026 forecast, up 6.1% | Forecast; see the platform note above |
| Sensor Tower | $82 billion | Mobile game revenue | 2025 estimate, published February 26, 2026 | Mobile only |
| Boston Consulting Group | Almost $130 billion | Mobile in-app purchases | 2025 estimate | BCG’s own estimate; in-app purchases are not the same scope as total game revenue |
| Circana | $60.7 billion | U.S. consumer spending on hardware, content, and accessories | 2025, up 1.4% from 2024 | U.S. only; includes hardware and accessories |
| Sensor Tower | 52 billion downloads | Mobile, PC, and console combined | 2025, published 2026 | Downloads, not players or revenue |
| GDC | 42% Unreal Engine; 30% Unity | Primary engine of surveyed developers | 2026 survey, January 2026 | Developers only; some year-over-year comparisons limited |
The two mobile figures cannot be reconciled. Sensor Tower’s $82 billion measures mobile game revenue, BCG’s roughly $130 billion measures mobile in-app purchases, and Newzoo’s $121.1 billion is a platform forecast from a different publisher using a different method. Quote each with its own label, and do not add the totals together.

What remains uncertain
The evidence supports a direction for the industry, not a single timeline. Forecasts also vary by publisher, methodology, year, and market definition, so treat any one figure as an estimate within a range.
| Open question | What the evidence shows | Signal to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud gaming adoption | BCG describes a platform-agnostic direction; no measured adoption rate is established | Published usage or adoption figures from a named source |
| Subscriptions versus individual purchases | Circana’s survey shows stated launch-price sensitivity (38% and 34%); the balance between models is not measured | Category-level spending in Circana’s releases, especially hardware and content lines |
| Commercial impact of generative AI | BCG lists it as a trend; no revenue effect is quantified | Disclosed revenue or cost effects from studios and platforms |
| Effects of app-store changes | BCG lists them as a trend; their size is not quantified | Changes to distribution or fee rules and the developer revenue reports that follow |
The sources cited here do not establish a definitive long-term market size or timeline for gaming.
