Valheim’s story goal is to prove your worth to Odin by helping reclaim the long-forgotten lands. In play, that means exploring each biome, gathering resources, crafting and building what you need to survive, and defeating that biome’s Forsaken One to unlock the next stage of progression.
What are you trying to do in Valheim?
Iron Gate’s official FAQ describes the premise as proving your worth to Odin by helping him reclaim Valheim. The game turns that story into a repeating survival-and-progression loop: enter a dangerous region, learn what it contains, prepare better equipment, then take on its boss.
There is no single short campaign route that replaces that loop. Valheim’s world is procedurally generated, and exploration, preparation, and building are part of the objective rather than distractions from it.
How does progression work?
- Explore a biome. Search its landscape, dungeons, crypts, or caves for resources and useful discoveries.
- Gather and craft. Materials found in each biome help you make weapons, armor, and equipment suited to tougher challenges. Crafting and processing stations turn raw materials into useful gear.
- Prepare to fight. Build or improve a base, gather food, and make the equipment and supplies you need before confronting the local boss.
- Defeat the Forsaken One. Each biome has a corresponding Forsaken One. Iron Gate says the boss yields items and skills that help you move on to the next biome.
- Repeat in new territory. Later regions bring new resources and greater difficulty, so the cycle of exploration, crafting, and preparation begins again.
The exact challenge depends on the biome and your preparation; the official FAQ describes the structure but does not prescribe one fixed route or loadout for every player.

Why spend time building and gathering?
A base gives you a place to craft, store resources, and prepare for expeditions. Players can also build outposts and use boats or portals to travel through the world. These systems support the main progression: better preparation makes exploration and boss encounters more manageable, while new regions provide materials for further upgrades.
Food is useful but not a strict survival requirement. Iron Gate’s FAQ says eating is not vital to staying alive, while also explaining that food affects your health and stamina. Choosing what to eat therefore changes how resilient and capable you are on an expedition.

Can you complete the goal alone or with friends?
Both. Iron Gate confirms single-player and co-op play, and the Steam listing describes Valheim as a game for 1–10 players. The broad goal—advancing through the biomes and defeating their Forsaken Ones—does not change between solo and shared play; a group can divide gathering, building, and preparation among its members.
For a persistent shared world, Iron Gate says players can download a dedicated-server application through Steam. The developer also states that it does not provide official servers, so a dedicated world is something players arrange themselves rather than an Iron Gate-hosted service. Iron Gate’s 1.0 FAQ, dated 1 July 2026 on the support index, lists Steam for Windows, Linux, and Mac; the Mac App Store for Mac; the Humble store for Windows, Linux, and Mac; and the Microsoft Store for Windows.
