The green segment in an Overwatch 2 health bar means overhealth: bonus health granted by certain abilities or ultimates. It is extra health, not an indicator that healing is in progress. Its amount and duration depend on the ability that provides it.
What does the green health bar mean?
Green health is overhealth—a bonus health pool added on top of a hero’s regular health by particular abilities or ultimates. Overwatch community explanations use this name for the green segment; Blizzard’s balance notes also treat overhealth as a mechanic with values that can be adjusted for individual abilities.

That distinction matters: seeing green means the hero has bonus health. It does not mean the bar is showing active healing.
Does all overhealth work the same way?
No single amount or timer applies to every source. Blizzard’s patch notes show ability-specific overhealth values and durations changing over time, so the ability that granted the health determines the relevant details.

| Ability or source | What the cited patch change says | What it does—and does not—tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Mauga’s Berserker passive | Blizzard’s March 25, 2025 patch notes reduced its overhealth conversion rate from 50% to 40%. Official patch notes | This is a change to Mauga’s passive, not a universal overhealth conversion rule. |
| Lúcio’s Sound Barrier | Blizzard’s May 2026 patch-note excerpt says its overhealth was reduced from 750 to 625 and its duration from 6 to 5 seconds. The developer comment says, “Reducing both its overhealth and duration shortens the mitigation window and places greater emphasis on timing.” Official patch notes | These figures apply to Sound Barrier in that patch, not to every green health source. |
The Sound Barrier values are specific balance figures, not a standing definition of green health. The linked May 2026 patch page was not directly accessible when these notes were compiled, so its quoted entry should be read in that specific ability context.
Can overhealth be healed, or does it disappear?
There is not enough evidence here to state one current rule for every hero, ability, and game mode. In particular, do not assume that all overhealth is unhealable, that it always decays at a fixed rate, or that it persists for the same length of time. Check the description and current details of the ability that granted it.

Is green health the same as armor or shields?
No: overhealth is the label for bonus health from certain abilities or ultimates. Armor and shields are other health-pool terms, but the available sources do not support a complete, current comparison of how every pool is displayed or recovered. The safe distinction for this question is that the green segment identifies overhealth, not a healing effect.
What happens when an enemy damages overhealth?
A 2023 Overwatch Forums reply says damage to overhealth gives the attacker half the normal ultimate charge. That is community guidance rather than an official rules reference, so treat it as a reported interaction—not a universal, officially verified rule for every ability or mode.

Why can the green bar change between updates?
Blizzard balance updates can change an individual ability’s overhealth amount, conversion rate, or duration. The Mauga and Lúcio examples above illustrate why older guides or clips may show different figures. For a specific hero, use current patch notes for that ability rather than applying a number from another source of overhealth.
