Green Rain is a one-day weather event added in Stardew Valley 1.6. It happens once at random each Summer, turning the valley green and creating a brief opportunity to gather moss, fiddlehead ferns, and other resources. It is normal game content—not a mod or a real-world weather condition.
When does Green Rain happen?
Green Rain occurs once each Summer on a randomly selected eligible date: Summer 5, 6, 7, 14, 15, 16, 18, or 23. Check the television’s Weather Report the day before; the event does not have one fixed date.

The forecast gives an intentionally uncertain warning: “Um… There appears to be some kind of… anomalous reading… I… don’t know what this means…” The green visual effect appears both outdoors and indoors.
The event was introduced in version 1.6; see the official 1.6 changelog.

What changes during the event?
Green Rain changes the valley’s vegetation for the day. Weeds appear in large quantities outside the Beach and Calico Desert, and trees may gain moss or change into unusual Green Rain Tree forms. Event weeds disappear the following day, so collect any you want before the weather clears.
- Mature trees have a 50% chance of becoming covered in moss.
- Mature Oak and Maple trees each have a 75% chance of temporarily transforming into Green Rain Trees.
- Outdoor saplings can advance several growth stages.
These are in-game mechanics documented by the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Weather entry, not real-world probabilities. Most transformed trees return to their usual form the next day, but some Green Rain Trees remain.
What should you gather?
Resource gathering is optional, but Green Rain is a useful day to collect materials that are less abundant at other times. Moss can be removed from trees with a tool, weapon, or bomb without cutting the tree down. It is used in crafting, including Mushroom Logs and Speed-Gro. The Moss entry covers its uses.
Choose a Green Rain Tree by its drops
| Tree type | What it offers | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Type 1 or Type 2 | When chopped, can provide moss, wood, sap, and sometimes Mossy Seeds. | Players seeking moss or ordinary tree materials. |
| Type 3 | Does not grow moss. Chopping gives five Fiddlehead Ferns, plus one from the stump. Tapping gives one fern every two days outside Winter. | Players seeking fiddlehead ferns. |
These distinctions matter if you want to preserve a tree: identify its type before chopping. The Green Rain Trees entry documents the types and their drops.

Can you visit or give gifts to villagers?
Most villagers stay indoors during Green Rain. The wiki lists Demetrius, Leah, and Linus as exceptions. In Year 1, gifts cannot be given during the event. Building and bedroom access also has special rules that day, so do not assume every usual route or visit will be available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Green Rain a quest or something to worry about?
No special quest or real-world item is required. The unusual forecast and green tint are signals of a temporary game event. You can spend the day gathering resources, or simply continue with your usual plans; the event is an opportunity, not a mandatory objective.
