There is no established IQ for game players as a group. No study has shown that gamers share a particular IQ score, and playing a game is not an IQ test. Studies instead measure specific cognitive skills such as memory, spatial ability, attention and task switching, and they report mixed, generally small associations with gaming experience. Asked whether gamers are smarter than non-gamers, the accurate answer is that the evidence does not show higher overall intelligence. It shows some narrow skill differences, some of which are small, some of which vanish when the full range of people is examined, and most of which do not prove that gaming caused them.
What the studies actually measured
Most claims about gamer intelligence rest on a handful of large reviews and a few influential experiments. They differ in who was studied, what was measured, and whether they looked at a snapshot of existing differences or at the effect of training. The table below sets out the main sources.
| Source | Design | Who was studied | Outcome measured | Reported finding | Causal claim? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zhao et al., Acta Psychologica (July 2026) | Systematic review and meta-analysis of 133 studies (2005 to August 2025), 269 effect sizes | 14,245 participants across included studies | Memory, spatial ability, visual attention, cognitive control, intelligence | Statistically significant but small correlation between video game play and cognitive ability in each domain, across all three study designs | No. The result is a relationship, not proof that playing raises IQ |
| Sala et al., comprehensive meta-analysis (PubMed record indexed 2017) | 310 correlational studies, 315 player/nonplayer comparisons, 359 training comparisons | General players and nonplayers, plus training participants | Cognitive ability, including effects of game training | Small or null overall effects | No. Found no evidence that playing video games causes enhanced cognitive ability |
| Unsworth et al., Psychological Science 26(6), 759–774 (2015) | Two experiments comparing extreme groups, then the full range of participants | Experienced players compared with nonplayers | Several cognitive measures | Experienced players outperformed nonplayers in the extreme-groups analysis; across the full range, nearly all relations were near zero | No. Correlational comparisons only |
| Journal of Intelligence (2024) | Meta-analysis of 52 samples from 44 papers | More than 6,100 adults | Game-related assessments compared with traditional cognitive ability measures | Observed r = 0.30 (corrected r = 0.45); results varied substantially | Not stated. Authors questioned whether both measure the same aspects of cognitive ability |
| Esports expertise meta-analysis (2024) | Three-level meta-analysis of 15 studies | 1,085 participants: professional or top-ranked esports players compared with amateurs | Cognitive performance, mainly spatial cognition and attention | Small expert advantage, Hedges’ g = 0.373 | Not stated. Comparison of expert and amateur players only |
| Nuyens et al., International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction 17, 389–414 (2019; published online 2018) | Systematic review of 32 papers | Non-problematic video gamers | Eight papers on task switching, 22 on attentional control, two on sub-second time perception | Potential benefits in specific skills; game genre can matter | Not stated. Reported potential benefits only |
Why no single gamer IQ exists
A reader who wants one number is asking a question the evidence cannot answer. Four distinctions explain why.
- Association is not cause. People with certain abilities may be drawn to particular games, and practice may improve skills those games use. A snapshot comparison cannot tell these explanations apart, and the 2017 meta-analysis found no causal evidence of broad cognitive gains from gaming.
- A task score is not full-scale IQ. Attention, spatial reasoning, working memory and in-game ranking are specific outcomes. They are not interchangeable with a standardized, broad intelligence measure. The 2024 Journal of Intelligence authors explicitly questioned whether game-based and traditional tests capture the same aspects of ability, so a game-derived score should not be labelled IQ.
- “Gamer” covers many different activities. Genre, weekly playing time, expertise, age and study design all vary. Findings about action-game training or elite esports players do not describe casual puzzle players or strategy fans.
- Group effects do not predict individuals. Even where a small group difference is reported, there is wide variation among players and among nonplayers. Gaming habits alone do not justify an estimate of any one person’s IQ.

- Is the study a snapshot comparison, or did it assign people to play and measure a change over time?
- Does it compare general players, selected experienced players, or esports experts? Expert-versus-amateur results do not transfer to the general population.
- What exactly was measured: an IQ or intelligence measure, attention, spatial cognition, or performance inside a game?
- Which genres and how much play counted as “gaming”? Many studies do not define this precisely.
- Does the headline say “associated with” or “makes you”? Only the second implies causation, and none of the sources above establish it.
What remains unknown
- No representative IQ average for people who play video games has been established. The 2026 review reports a relationship with several domains, but its abstract gives no population mean.
- Studies define gaming experience and cognitive outcomes differently, which limits how far results can be compared across papers.
- Whether training in a specific game produces lasting gains that transfer to broad intelligence is not settled by the sources reviewed here.
Zhao and colleagues describe their findings as a statistically significant but small correlation between video game play and cognitive ability, as reported in their PubMed record. That is the most current summary available, and it stops short of any single gamer IQ figure.
