Plants vs. Zombies is built around a simple, comic premise: plants defend a home from a zombie attack. Its story comes through the action, Crazy Dave’s eccentric behavior, and jokes in the game’s Almanac—not through a detailed explanation of how the outbreak began. The comics expand the setting with Neighborville and characters such as Patrice and Nate, but the available sources do not establish one official timeline connecting every game and comic.
What is the basic story of Plants vs. Zombies?
In the original game, the player protects a home by placing plants that stop waves of approaching zombies. That premise is the foundation of the series’ story: a neighborhood under attack, defended with increasingly unusual plants.
Electronic Arts’ 2019 anniversary retrospective describes the game as a strategy experience shaped by simplifying tower defense while keeping it readable and fun. It also recalls the plants, zombies, Crazy Dave, and the Almanac as part of the game’s identity. EA’s anniversary retrospective
How does the game tell its story?
The original game favors comic presentation over sustained plot exposition. The conflict unfolds through play, while Crazy Dave’s behavior and the Almanac’s humorous entries add personality to the world. The jokes and puns are not incidental decoration; they are a central part of how Plants vs. Zombies makes its absurd home-defense scenario feel distinctive.

That light touch leaves many questions open. The sources cited here do not establish a detailed official account of the zombies’ origin, a complete biography for Crazy Dave, or a single chronology for the franchise. A funny Almanac entry or a strange moment in a game can add flavor without resolving those larger questions.
What do the comics add?
The comics broaden the setting beyond the original game’s home-defense premise. A 2015 interview with writer Paul Tobin, available here through a secondary wiki page, describes his work establishing Neighborville and introducing the comic characters Patrice and Nate. That is useful context for the comics’ expansion of the story world, but it should not be treated as proof that every game follows the same narrative.

Penguin Random House’s Plants vs. Zombies book-series catalog confirms a published book line and describes stories involving Crazy Dave. It provides a route to more franchise fiction; it does not settle how comic events fit with the games.
Is there an official Plants vs. Zombies timeline?
The sources available here do not establish a unified chronology connecting all games, comics, and spin-offs. It is safer to describe story details by their specific medium or installment than to combine them into one definitive sequence. The comics have an expanded setting and cast; the original game centers on a home defended from zombies. Neither fact, by itself, determines how all later material relates.

Fan timelines and outbreak explanations may be entertaining interpretations, but they remain theories unless a specific official game, publisher, or creator source supports them. The clearest answer is that Plants vs. Zombies has a recognizable premise and recurring comic world, rather than a fully documented franchise-wide lore bible.
