The highest block coordinate you can actually place a block at is y=319, because y=320 is the boundary just above it. The Overworld extends down to y=-64. The one documented exception is Bedrock’s legacy “Old” world type, which keeps its original height.
Build limit versus highest placeable block
Minecraft’s official 1.18 materials use “build up to y320” as the headline figure, and that is the number most players mean by the build limit. Precisely, though, a block occupies a coordinate below that boundary. If you need the highest block position, the answer is y=319. Both numbers describe the same ceiling, so use y=320 when asking how high the world goes and y=319 when asking which block row is the last one you can fill.
Java Edition
The Java Edition 1.18 release notes state that Overworld build and generation limits were expanded 64 blocks up and 64 blocks down, for a total vertical range of 384 blocks. The same notes say underground features, structures, and caves now generate down to y=-64. The official 1.18 feature coverage gives the upper boundary as y=320.
Bedrock Edition
The Bedrock Edition 1.18.0 release notes state that the Overworld height and depth were extended to y=320 and y=-64 for both new and existing worlds. That means a Bedrock world created before the update is not limited to the old ceiling in the standard Overworld, which is a different outcome from the legacy Old world type discussed below.

The legacy Bedrock Old world type
Bedrock’s Old world type is the material exception. Mojang’s Bedrock FAQ describes it as a finite world measuring 256 × 256 blocks horizontally with a maximum height of 128 blocks. The same FAQ says existing Old worlds do not receive the height increase delivered by the 1.18 release.

What the official wording says
Mojang’s “Caves & Cliffs Part II: The Features” explainer, published December 3, 2021, puts the change this way: “You can push your creativity like never before and build all the way up to y320, or if you’re brave enough to explore the deepest depths of the world then you can now dig down to y-64, discovering bigger caves and brilliant new biomes along the way.” That quotation is release-context language. The coordinates in the table are the authoritative answer for standard Overworld worlds.

Scope of these limits
These figures come from Mojang’s official release notes and FAQ for the Overworld. They do not establish limits for custom dimensions, modified or third-party servers, mods, or experimental configurations, so check those settings directly rather than assuming the Overworld numbers apply. The sources also date from 2021. If you are reading this after a later update, confirm the current values against the latest official patch notes.
