The documented normal maximum for an individual Escape from Tarkov skill is level 51, called Elite. Certain stimulant and provision effects can temporarily raise a skill above 51, up to level 60, but that boosted value is not a higher permanent cap.
What does the level 51 cap mean?
The level cap applies to each individual skill, not to your PMC character level. Escape from Tarkov tracks skills separately; TarkovWiki’s current skills reference lists 49 of them. The skill reference describes level 51 as the normal maximum and labels it Elite. The Official Escape from Tarkov Wiki’s character-skills page documents the cap, while TarkovWiki’s skills list shows the separate skill progression track.
Can a skill go above level 51?
Yes, temporarily. According to the character-skills reference, certain stimulant and provision status effects can boost a skill beyond its normal cap, up to level 60. That is a temporary effect, not permanent progression: level 51 remains the documented normal maximum.
What does Elite do?
Elite is the name for level 51, but its benefit is not one universal bonus shared by every skill. Most skills have a skill-specific Elite perk, so the effect depends on which skill you have maxed. Consult the individual skill entry in the character-skills reference for its listed perk.

Did a progression update change the maximum?
An announcement on the official Escape from Tarkov Telegram channel describes faster skill progression—up to 60% faster—and adjusted in-raid limits. Those are changes to progression speed and in-raid limits; the announcement does not state that the maximum skill level changed. The reference reports the cap and temporary boosts, but its search result gives no publication or update year, so level 51 is best described as the documented normal cap rather than as a newly confirmed official change.
