Nintendo’s published examples range from €400 in euro-denominated regions to US$800 in the United States, with different limits in other currencies. The 24-hour amount you can add may also be limited separately.
Maximum Nintendo eShop balance by region
Nintendo’s support pages publish limits for the regions below. These are local-currency amounts, so they should not be compared as if they represented equal purchasing power. The lists are not a complete worldwide directory.

To find the applicable figure, check the country on your Nintendo Account and use Nintendo’s support page for that account’s eShop region. The euro amount in Nintendo UK’s table applies to its listed euro-denominated regions; it does not establish a limit for every country with an eShop.
Why a top-up can fail below the balance cap
The total balance ceiling is not the only possible restriction. Nintendo’s Americas guidance also distinguishes a 24-hour funding limit; reaching it can produce error code 2813-5509. For the currencies listed on Nintendo UK’s support table, the stated maximum amount addable in 24 hours is the same as the table’s maximum balance. Do not assume that daily allowance applies identically in regions not covered by those pages.

Check the two limits
- Balance headroom: work out whether the top-up would take your existing balance over the country’s maximum.
- Recent additions: if the balance would remain below the cap, consider whether you have already reached the applicable 24-hour amount-added limit.
Nintendo advises waiting at least 24 hours when the daily limit applies. If your balance is at or near its ceiling, spend some of it before trying to add more.
Ways to add funds and region requirements
Nintendo’s US, Canadian, and Mexican instructions list credit cards, Nintendo eShop cards, and PayPal as ways to add funds. PayPal is available there only to Nintendo Account owners aged 18 or older. A payment card must be issued in the same country as the eShop being used.

A prepaid Nintendo eShop card must match the account’s region. Redeeming a card does not bypass the maximum balance: the resulting total still cannot exceed the applicable cap.

Nintendo says funds do not carry over when you change the country on your Nintendo Account. Spend the remaining balance before changing it. Nintendo gives games, downloadable content, in-game content, and Nintendo Switch Online membership time as examples of ways to use funds. After the balance reaches zero, change the country through the Nintendo Account website by following Nintendo’s country-change instructions.

- Double check if the URL/website is genuine before entering card details online. Do not provide any gift card details (example: claim code) to someone you do not know or trust. There are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
