The Assassin’s Creed logo is a stylized letter A. According to its original designer, Malcolm Riley, it draws on Arabic letterform inspiration and abstract blade shapes, and it was built to read as one clear emblem in both historical and futuristic settings. The more widely told story, that the symbol resembles an eagle skull pressed into sand, is an in-world explanation added to the series later. It is not how the logo was designed.
How the logo was designed
Riley’s portfolio entry, published by Farside Creative, is the main primary source for the logo’s real-world origin. It identifies Ubisoft as the client and Feref Ltd as the agency. In it, Riley states his goal directly: “I aimed to create an instantly recognizable logo and symbol that could work in a historical setting as well as a futuristic one.”
That goal explains the two inspirations he describes. The mark needed to suit a franchise that moves between eras, so the design had to avoid anything that would date it to one period.
Arabic letterforms, with a caveat
Riley looked at Arabic letterforms after encountering theories about where the word “assassin” comes from. He is clear that the etymology itself was uncertain, so the logo should not be read as a statement about the word’s history. The Arabic letterforms were a source of visual inspiration, not a borrowed character.

Blade shapes from the period’s weapons
Riley also researched the weapons associated with the game’s historical setting and worked them into abstract blade shapes. The stylized A combines these two strands: a letter-like silhouette and a suggestion of a blade.
The in-world explanation: an eagle skull in sand
Later, the franchise gave the emblem a story of its own. Ubisoft’s retrospective on Assassin’s Creed Origins says the insignia was revealed to be the imprint of an eagle skull on sand, a resemblance the creative team had noticed years earlier. That is lore inside the series. It explains what the symbol means to characters in the fiction, and it does not describe the designer’s process.

Real-world design and series lore compared
| Question | Real-world design origin | In-universe explanation |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A stylized letter A made of abstract blade shapes | The imprint of an eagle skull in sand |
| Who gave the explanation | Malcolm Riley, the original logo designer | Ubisoft, in its retrospective on Assassin’s Creed Origins |
| Inspiration cited | Arabic letterforms and the weapons of the game’s historical period | A visual coincidence within the game’s world |
| Where it applies | How the mark was designed | How the symbol is explained inside the series |
The two accounts answer different questions and do not conflict. A reader can accept the designer’s account of the logo’s creation and the franchise’s account of the symbol’s fictional meaning at the same time.
What the logo does not claim

- It is not a literal Arabic letter, and it is not spelling a specific Arabic word.
- It is not a direct picture of a hidden blade.
- It does not prove the origin of the word “assassin.” Riley’s starting point was a theory he described as uncertain.
How much the public record establishes
Two primary sources carry most of what is known. Riley’s portfolio entry is the authority on his stated intent. Ubisoft’s Origins retrospective is the authority on the fictional eagle-skull explanation. Neither source gives measured or survey-based data about what the symbol means to players, so any statement about how audiences interpret the logo would be an opinion rather than a documented finding.
When you see the logo in a game, on packaging, or in merchandise, the most accurate short answer is the one the designer gave: it is an abstract A built from Arabic letterform inspiration and blade shapes, made to work across eras. The eagle-skull story is the franchise’s own mythology, layered on top of that design.
