For 2014 fifth-edition D&D, a single-class Twilight Domain cleric is a strong answer to “most broken cleric build,” chiefly because Twilight Sanctuary can repeatedly protect several nearby allies during an encounter. That is an optimization judgment, not an official ranking: what feels overpowered depends on the campaign, party, and table.
Why Twilight cleric is the strongest answer
The case rests on a package of useful features rather than one mandatory character-sheet trick. Twilight clerics gain heavy-armor and martial-weapon proficiency, unusually long darkvision that can be shared, and a feature that can help one creature get a better initiative roll. Their signature ability, Twilight Sanctuary, is the main reason the domain can feel unusually powerful in play.
Twilight Sanctuary turns one use into recurring party defense
When the cleric uses Channel Divinity to create Twilight Sanctuary, a moving sphere of dim light extends 30 feet from the cleric and lasts for up to one minute. At the end of a creature’s turn while it is in the sphere, the cleric can grant it temporary hit points or end a charmed or frightened effect on it. Because this can benefit multiple creatures over successive turns, it can blunt pressure across a party rather than protect only one target.
There is no defensible universal damage-prevention total: the value depends on how many allies stay in range, how often the cleric can use Channel Divinity, and whether the encounter’s threats make temporary hit points or condition removal relevant.

The rest of the feature package matters too
- Durability: Heavy-armor proficiency supports a sturdier frontline or midline character.
- Darkvision: Eyes of Night grants long-range darkvision and can share it with allies.
- Initiative: Vigilant Blessing can give one creature advantage on its next initiative roll.
- Party protection: Twilight Sanctuary provides the domain’s standout repeatable defensive effect.
You do not need a particular race, feat, multiclass, or spell list for the core recommendation. The supported claim is that the Twilight domain has an unusually strong feature package, not that one exact character build is uniquely optimal.
Twilight versus Peace: protection or better rolls?
Peace Domain is the closest comparison because both Peace and Twilight are cleric options in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, published by Wizards of the Coast on November 10, 2020. Their strengths are different:

The official book listing establishes that both domains appear in Tasha’s; the comparison above is about their broad play patterns, not a measured performance ranking. Choose based on the kind of advantage your group values and how the campaign’s encounters play out.
Which rules version are you using?
This recommendation refers to the Twilight Domain as published for the 2014 fifth-edition rules in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. It is not a claim that Twilight is one of the four domains in the 2024 Player’s Handbook; Wizards of the Coast’s comparison identifies those as Life, Light, Trickery, and War.

If your table uses the 2024 Cleric class with an older subclass, check the rules your group is using for compatibility and feature timing. The official 2024 Basic Rules say a cleric gains “each of your subclass’s features that are of your Cleric level or lower.” The class progression and some domain rules differ from the 2014 version, so do not assume that every build detail transfers unchanged. - Party positioning: Sanctuary is most useful when allies can stay within its area as the cleric moves.
- Encounter and rest cadence: How often encounters occur and how often Channel Divinity can be used changes the practical value of the feature.
- Level range: Consider which subclass features are available at the levels your campaign is likely to reach.
- Group preference: A feature can be mechanically potent and still be a poor fit if it makes the group’s encounters less enjoyable.
- DM rulings: Agree on how the chosen rules version and any older subclass content apply before play.
