The most efficient water layout for a flat Minecraft crop farm is a 9×9 square with a single water source in the center. That one source hydrates every farmland block within four blocks horizontally, diagonals included, which leaves 80 farmland blocks in the plot for each water block. Larger fields are built by repeating that plot or by running water channels with the same four-block limit in mind.
How farmland hydration works
Hydration is the rule everything else depends on. Minecraft’s official farmland article and the Minecraft Wiki describe the same core behavior:

- Range: a water block hydrates farmland up to four blocks away horizontally. Diagonal distance counts, so the reach is a square rather than a circle.
- Height: the water must be at the same vertical level as the farmland or one block higher.
- Obstacles: blocks between the water and the farmland do not block hydration.
- Water type: flowing water and still water can both hydrate farmland, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s farmland page.
Because the reach is a square, a single water block covers a 9×9 area: four blocks in each direction plus the water’s own column and row. That geometry is why the 9×9 plot is the standard starting point.
Building a 9×9 plot step by step
This is the layout the Minecraft Wiki’s crop-farming guide describes as a repeatable, efficient arrangement for simple farms.

- Clear a flat 9×9 area. Keep the surface level so the water and farmland sit at the same height.
- Choose the center tile. Remove any block there and place a water source with a water bucket. This is the only water block in the plot.
- Convert the other 80 tiles to farmland. Hold a hoe and use it on dirt, grass block, or dirt-type ground. Official guidance is to create farmland this way and then check that the soil looks darker and wet, which shows it is hydrated.
- Plant your crops on the farmland. The 80 tiles are all within the water’s reach.
- Protect the plot. Add light for the plants and fence the edges so animals cannot trample the soil. Both points are covered in the protection section below.
Comparing water layouts
The table compares the three common approaches. The farmland-per-water figures for the channel layout are arithmetic from the four-block limit, not measured yields.
| Layout | Water blocks | Farmland blocks hydrated | Farmland per water block | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single 9×9 plot with a centered source | 1 per plot | 80 per plot | 80 to 1 | Compact farms with few visible water blocks |
| Repeated 9×9 plots tiled in both directions | 1 per 9×9 plot | 80 per plot | 80 to 1 at any size | Large fields built from identical units |
| Water channels one block wide, every 9th column | 1 channel column per 9 columns (a line of water along each channel) | 8 columns of farmland between channels | 8 to 1 along the channel | Long fields where walking along the water is convenient |
On water economy alone, the centered 9×9 plot is the most efficient of the three. Channels trade some of that efficiency for easier access: you can walk along the water line and reach crops without stepping onto farmland.

Scaling up: tiling or channels
For a bigger farm, you have two options that keep every farmland block within four horizontal blocks of water.
- Tile the 9×9 plots. Repeat the plot in both horizontal directions. Each plot is self-contained, so the layout is easy to check and extend.
- Run water channels. Place a water line through the field and space the next line so no farmland tile is more than four blocks from one. In a one-block channel, that means a new channel every nine columns. The exact count of water blocks depends on your field’s footprint and how you lay out the channels.
If your field is not square or has obstacles, apply the four-block rule to the actual shape rather than forcing a 9×9 grid onto it. Check the farthest tile from each water source.

Protecting the farm
A single center water block has one practical risk: you can step into it and then jump onto the farmland. Covering the water with a walkable slab or a similar block reduces that risk while keeping the hydration intact. The Minecraft Wiki’s crop-farming guide also discusses trampling, which is why fencing the plot against animals is recommended in official guidance. Light matters too. Crops grow in darkness only when light reaches them, so an underground or night-time farm may need torches or other light sources.

- Crop type: the 9×9 farmland geometry applies to crops planted on farmland, such as wheat, carrots, and potatoes. Sugar cane has its own placement rule, which requires water adjacent to the cane, so do not build it on the same grid.
- Edition and version: the hydration rules above match the Minecraft Wiki’s description. If you play a different edition or a version with changed behavior, check that edition’s current documentation before building an edge-case layout.
- Age of the official page: the official Minecraft farmland article is dated 2017 on its page. It remains useful for basic steps, but the Wiki’s more detailed mechanics are the better reference for layout geometry.
The standard answer holds for a flat, standard-edition crop farm: a centered source in a 9×9 plot is the most water-efficient layout, and channels or tiled plots extend it when the field grows.
