That is different from the larger pink ring around your avatar, which Niantic says marks the distance at which you can interact with PokéStops and Gyms. Where the ring appears—and whether it shows up only after you tap—matters.
What a pink ring beneath a Pokémon means
Players have reported that a pink ring beneath a Pokémon indicates a regular Incense spawn. This is a community-described visual convention, not an explanation in Niantic’s official Map View guide, so treat it as a likely clue rather than a guaranteed identification. The player discussion also notes that other spawn sources may have different visual effects.
How to tell it apart from the pink ring around your avatar
Niantic’s Map View guide describes two circles around the trainer. The white circle is the area in which wild Pokémon appear. The larger pink ring marks the distance at which you can interact with PokéStops and Gyms. It is a map boundary around your avatar, not an Incense marker beneath an individual Pokémon.
What if the ring appears after you tap a Pokémon?
An older Arqade answer from October 2016 describes a pink circle appearing around a wild Pokémon after it was tapped. In that account, the circle acted as a selection cue, helping show which Pokémon had registered the tap when several were close together. Because this is an older player Q&A, it is a possible explanation for a post-tap ring, not a definitive description of the current interface.
