What Is the Point of Different Profiles on the Nintendo Switch?

Switch profiles give each player a separate user identity, personal settings and associated save data. Learn when a Nintendo Account matters and where profiles do not create separate controls.

Different Nintendo Switch profiles let each player keep their own identity, personal settings and user-associated save data on the same console. You can create a local profile without a Nintendo Account; link one only if that player needs account-based online features. Nintendo allows up to eight user profiles per system.

What a separate Switch profile does

Nintendo describes a user profile as a way for an individual player to manage personal settings and save data. Each player can select their own profile when using the console, rather than sharing one user identity. A Switch system supports up to eight profiles, according to Nintendo Support.

Profiles do not combine save data: Nintendo states that “Save data cannot be merged with other users.” A game may have its own shared-data rules, so check the rules for a specific title rather than assuming every part of its data belongs to one profile.

One shared profile or a profile for each player?

Setup What it means
One profile used by several players Players share the same user identity and do not get the per-user separation of settings and save data described by Nintendo.
A separate profile for each player Each player has a distinct user identity, with personal settings and associated save data kept with that profile.

Separate profiles are the practical choice when multiple people use one console and want their own user-associated data. A profile is a local user on the console; it is not automatically a separate Nintendo Account.

Does every Switch profile need a Nintendo Account?

No. Nintendo’s user-setup instructions let you create a profile and continue without linking a Nintendo Account. Linking is optional for creating the local user, but it enables that user’s access to online modes, Nintendo eShop and other applications that require internet access, friend codes, social-media posting, and use of the parental-controls app. See Nintendo’s profile setup instructions.

Take care when linking: Nintendo says a Nintendo Account link cannot be undone. Confirm that you have the right account before associating it with a profile; Nintendo’s account FAQ covers account-linking questions.

How parental controls relate to profiles

Having separate profiles does not, by itself, give each player separate console-wide restrictions. Nintendo says most parental-control restrictions apply to everyone using the system. Its smart-device parental-controls app offers features such as daily play-time limits and gameplay history, while eShop purchase and viewing restrictions can be managed in Nintendo Account settings. Check Nintendo’s parental-controls guidance for the scope of each control.

A Nintendo Account family group is a separate account-management feature, not a set of per-profile console controls. Nintendo says a family group can include up to eight Nintendo Account users, including parent/guardian and supervised accounts. That limit concerns accounts in the group, not the number of profiles on a console. See Nintendo’s family-group explanation.

What happens when you move a profile to another Switch?

A user transfer is not a way to merge data or keep a duplicate profile on both consoles. Nintendo says a transfer moves the selected user’s profile, associated save data and purchased software off the source console. Some data shared by all users is handled separately; Nintendo specifically notes that Animal Crossing: New Horizons save data requires its own transfer process. Review Nintendo’s transfer instructions before moving a user.

Local saves and cloud saves are different

Separate local profiles do not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership just to exist or keep their user-associated saves on the console. Cloud saves are a distinct online-service feature: Nintendo says Save Data Cloud access across multiple consoles at the same time requires Nintendo Switch Online membership. Cloud support also varies by game, so confirm that the specific title supports it before relying on cloud backup. Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud FAQ explains the service.
