What Is Video Encoding? YouTube Live Settings for Gaming Streams

Video encoding compresses your game video and audio into a stream YouTube can ingest. Choose settings by codec, resolution, frame rate, and stable upload capacity.

Video encoding converts your game footage and audio into a compressed digital stream that YouTube can receive and distribute. For YouTube Live, start with a supported codec, use constant bitrate (CBR), set a two-second keyframe interval, and choose the bitrate YouTube recommends for your resolution, frame rate, and ingest codec. Then test that your upload connection and encoder can sustain those settings before you go live.

What video encoding does in a YouTube gaming stream

Your game produces video and audio; an encoder compresses that material into a format and data rate suitable for sending over the internet. The encoder can be software running on your gaming PC or standalone hardware. Hardware can suit external AV gear or multi-camera setups, but it is not required to configure an ordinary YouTube Live stream.

YouTube receives the encoded signal and automatically transcodes it into playback formats for different devices and network conditions. Your job is to provide a stable, supported ingest stream; the format you send is not necessarily the only format viewers receive. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes software and hardware options, while its live-streaming tips advise testing and checking stream health.

YouTube Live encoder settings to use

YouTube’s official encoder settings and bitrate guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and a maximum frame rate of 60 fps. Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it: it is the encrypted extension of RTMP. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance explains the transport encryption.

Setting Recommended value or guidance
Ingest protocol RTMP or RTMPS; prefer RTMPS for encrypted transport where supported.
Video codec H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, subject to your encoder and workflow.
Bitrate mode CBR (constant bitrate).
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps.
Audio codec AAC or MP3. RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 surround is supported only with AAC.

Recommended video bitrates

Choose a bitrate for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send. These are YouTube’s recommended ingest rates in Mbps—not guarantees of image quality or a universal minimum internet speed. Each cell lists AV1/H.265 first and H.264 second. Source: YouTube’s official encoder settings page, accessed October 3, 2026.

Ingest resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 H.264
720p30 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p30 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1440p60 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
2160p30 (4K) 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p60 (4K) 35 Mbps 50 Mbps

Minimums are lower than recommendations and should not be mistaken for the target rate. For example, at 1080p30 YouTube lists minimums of 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 5 Mbps for H.264; at 1080p60, the minimums are 4 Mbps and 6 Mbps respectively. These are YouTube guidance, not evidence that a connection at the minimum will be reliable for your particular game, network, or encoder.

Advanced video and audio options

  • Use square pixels and progressive scan. YouTube recommends two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC entropy coding.
  • For SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 and 10-bit; AV1 is not supported for HDR in this guidance.
  • For AV1 at 3840×2160 and above, YouTube calls for at least two tile columns.
  • For audio, use 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. Recommended audio bitrates are 128 kbps stereo and 384 kbps 5.1; RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 requires AAC.

How to choose settings for gameplay

  1. Pick a resolution and frame rate. Match the output to what your game, capture setup, and encoder can sustain. Fast-moving gameplay may benefit from 60 fps; a commentary-focused or slower-paced broadcast may not need it. These are content-based choices, while the bitrate table above supplies YouTube’s recommendations.
  2. Select a supported codec. Use a codec your encoder can produce reliably. If you are streaming HDR, choose H.265 rather than AV1 based on YouTube’s stated HDR support.
  3. Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Keep the keyframe interval at or below YouTube’s four-second ceiling.
  4. Set the bitrate from the table. Use the row for the ingest resolution and frame rate and the column for your codec.
  5. Check sustained upload capacity. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and selecting settings that remain reliable over the available connection. A speed-test result alone does not establish that your upload will stay stable during a broadcast; YouTube does not specify one universal headroom percentage.
  6. Run a representative test stream. Use similar game motion and audio, then check stream health and warnings in YouTube’s Live Control Room before the event and while live.

Connect the encoder with a stream key

YouTube’s Live Control Room can detect encoder settings automatically. A stream key connects your encoder to the selected live setup, alongside the stream URL. Follow YouTube’s instructions for managing live stream settings to find those details and keep the key private. If a key is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room.

Latency is the delay between capture and viewer playback. Lower latency can increase playback buffering, so it matters most when you need a timely audience response. YouTube says 4K/2160p streams do not offer the low-latency optimization option and use normal latency. Review the latency options in the Live Control Room settings before choosing a mode for an interactive broadcast.

Copyright and reused game footage

Encoding settings do not grant permission to broadcast a game, soundtrack, or other material. Before streaming, check the rights and any publisher rules that apply to the game and music in your broadcast. A technically healthy stream can still face a copyright claim or interruption if its content is not authorized. For a practical pre-stream check, use the copyright safety checklist.

Common encoding problems and fixes

Symptom What to check Fix
Stream health reports instability or viewers see buffering Whether the connection sustains the configured bitrate; whether the selected rate matches codec, resolution, and frame rate. Test upload performance under representative conditions, then lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a rate the connection can sustain.
Encoder settings are rejected or stream will not start Codec support, ingest destination, stream URL, and stream key. Use a codec and settings supported by YouTube and your encoder; verify the URL and key in the matching Live Control Room setup.
Keyframe or bitrate warning appears Whether the encoder is actually outputting CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Set CBR and two seconds; do not exceed four seconds, then run another test.
Stream disconnects after a key may have been exposed Whether someone else could use the stream key. Reset the key in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder with the new key.
HDR colors or format do not work as expected Codec and bit depth. For HDR, use H.265 with 10-bit output; do not select AV1 for HDR under YouTube’s stated support.
5.1 audio is missing or not accepted Audio codec, channel layout, and sample rate. Use AAC for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS and 48 kHz; for stereo, YouTube specifies 44.1 kHz.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel using uploaded recordings rather than a live camera or gameplay session, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It is YouTube-only and does not replace a live gameplay encoder for a broadcast you are playing in real time.
