1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFrame rate, measured in frames per second (FPS), is how many individual video frames are sent or displayed each second. For live streaming, 30 FPS is a sensible starting point for relatively static content; choose 60 FPS when smoother motion matters and your camera, encoder, upload connection and streaming platform can all sustain it.
What does FPS mean, and how is it different from resolution?
FPS means frames per second: the frequency at which a video delivers frames. Resolution describes the image’s pixel dimensions. Raising FPS does not raise resolution; it sends more frames at the same image dimensions. Twitch Help describes resolution as the size of a video on a screen and frame rate as how often animation frames are sent to Twitch.
More frames can make fast movement look smoother, but they also affect encoding and network demands. The right setting is the highest one your complete setup can deliver reliably—not simply the highest option in a camera or encoder menu.
Should you stream at 30 or 60 FPS?
| Setting | May suit | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| 30 FPS | Talking-head streams, presentations and other relatively low-motion content; it can conserve encoding or network capacity. | Your platform’s bitrate guidance, stable upload capacity and camera output mode. |
| 60 FPS | Gameplay, sports and other motion-heavy content where smoother movement is useful. | Camera or capture-device support, encoder load, upload headroom, platform limits and bitrate guidance. |
These are practical rules of thumb, not universal content rules. Compare the motion you need to show with the resolution, bitrate, capture support and platform limits your setup can handle.

YouTube Live FPS and bitrate settings
YouTube Live lists frame rates up to 60 FPS. Its current guidance recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default; manual selection is available with a custom stream key. The bitrate figures below are YouTube platform recommendations, not universal minimums. The minimums and recommendations depend on both resolution and ingestion codec.
| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 FPS | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 FPS | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These values are from YouTube Help’s encoder settings guidance, current when accessed in 2026. Use the figures for the codec you actually send to YouTube; do not treat one codec’s recommendation as interchangeable with another’s. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval.

Check the whole capture-to-stream chain
Camera or capture device
A camera must support the resolution-and-FPS combination you want to use. A streaming guide notes that most webcams support 30 FPS and some support 60 FPS, but capabilities vary by model. Check the exact device’s supported capture modes: a camera may offer 60 FPS only at a lower resolution, or not at all.
Encoder and computer
The encoder must process the selected resolution and frame rate without falling behind. If the encoder cannot keep up, a higher FPS setting can lead to unstable output rather than smoother motion. Test the actual scene and monitor stream health instead of assuming that a setting shown in a menu is sustainable.

Upload connection
Upload capacity must cover the configured stream bitrate with room for variation. Twitch Help’s public FAQ excerpt advises upload capacity around 30% higher than the stream bitrate; its example pairs a 6 Mbps stream bitrate with an 8 Mbps upload connection. That is platform guidance, not a guarantee for every connection. Run an upload speed test and leave headroom rather than setting your stream at the line’s measured maximum.
Streaming platform
Use the platform’s current limits and recommendations for your ingest settings. YouTube’s detailed table varies by codec, resolution and FPS. Twitch’s available guidance includes multiple frame-rate references, so do not assume one FPS applies to every Twitch streamer or content type; check Twitch’s current guidance for your setup.

Set and test your FPS before going live
- Choose a target resolution and FPS. Start with 30 FPS for relatively static material or consider 60 FPS when fast motion needs to look smoother.
- Verify the capture mode. Confirm that the camera or capture device supports that exact resolution-and-FPS combination.
- Check your platform’s ingest settings. For YouTube, consult its current codec-specific bitrate table, use CBR, and set a 2-second keyframe interval. Automatic resolution and FPS detection is YouTube’s default recommendation; manual selection uses a custom stream key.
- Test upload capacity. Run an upload speed test and allow headroom above the configured stream bitrate. A speed test alone does not show whether the connection will remain stable during the stream.
- Run a representative test stream. Include audio and movement similar to the real broadcast, then check stream health and adjust if the feed is unstable.
YouTube Help specifically advises testing before a live stream with audio and movement similar to what you will do on stream. A quiet desktop test is not a useful substitute for testing gameplay, sports or other motion-heavy material.

- The camera will not offer the FPS you want: Check the device’s supported resolution-and-FPS combinations. Select a supported mode or use a capture device that supports the intended mode.
- The stream looks choppy or the encoder cannot keep up: The selected frame rate may exceed the capacity of the capture or encoding chain. Test at 30 FPS, or reduce another demanding setting, and compare stream health.
- The stream drops frames or becomes unstable: Check upload speed and bitrate headroom. The configured bitrate should not consume all available upload capacity; test the actual connection during representative use.
- The stream settings do not match the platform’s guidance: Recheck the platform table for the chosen resolution, FPS and codec. For YouTube, do not confuse H.264 recommendations with AV1/H.265 recommendations.
- The test looks fine but the real stream does not: Repeat the test with similar motion and audio, then monitor stream health during the broadcast. Conditions under a representative load matter more than a still, low-motion test.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your plan is to keep a YouTube channel live by looping uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It plays the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60 FPS at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not a camera-based live broadcast. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
