Wario and Waluigi do not have a detailed shared origin story in the available official material. Nintendo describes Wario as Mario’s self-professed archrival, known to Mario since they were babies, and Waluigi as Wario’s pal and accomplice and Luigi’s self-proclaimed rival. Their creation histories are separate: Wario began as a boss in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, while Camelot created Waluigi as Wario’s doubles partner in Mario Tennis 64. The sources do not establish that the two are brothers or blood relatives.

Wario’s backstory: from Mario-like boss to leading character

Wario first appeared as a boss in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (1992). Nintendo designer Hiroji Kiyotake recalled that he wanted a boss who would be more interesting than a character who was simply frightening. He began by sketching a large figure dressed somewhat like Mario. The name “Wario” was provisional during development but stayed. Kiyotake also said the sharp moustache was intended to make Wario look villainous, rather than to form a letter W. Nintendo DREAM WEB’s interview with Kiyotake

Wario later became the protagonist of Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land. Kiyotake said he found Mario games unforgiving and thought a particularly resilient character could make a game easier for him to play. He also saw Wario as a character he could take in directions that would not suit Mario. That is a creator’s account of the design process, not an in-universe explanation of Wario’s childhood. What Nintendo says about Wario and Mario

Nintendo’s current character profile calls Wario Mario’s self-professed archrival and says they have known each other since they were babies. It also describes Wario as fond of garlic and making money. The profile supplies a concise account of their fictional relationship, but it does not explain how their rivalry began. How Waluigi was created

Waluigi was created by Camelot for Mario Tennis 64. Camelot co-creator Shugo Takahashi said the idea came up while the team was assembling doubles pairings: Mario could partner with Luigi, so who would team up with Wario? Camelot first asked Nintendo to create a character, then proposed making one themselves. Waluigi debuted in Mario Tennis 64. Nintendo DREAM WEB’s interview with Takahashi

His design gave Wario a thin, Luigi-like counterpart and gave the doubles roster more visual contrast. Takahashi described Waluigi as Luigi’s rival, not Mario’s. Nintendo’s profile similarly calls him Luigi’s self-proclaimed rival, and describes him as Wario’s pal and accomplice. It also notes his long limbs as an advantage in sports. Are Wario and Waluigi brothers?

The cited material does not establish that they are brothers, cousins, or other blood relatives. When asked directly about a family connection, Takahashi said he had not heard that they were related by blood. Asked about their relationship, he said the developers had not thought beyond describing them as partners. Nintendo’s current profile calls Waluigi Wario’s “pal and accomplice,” not his brother. That leaves an important distinction: the interviews explain why the developers made Waluigi for a tennis game, but do not provide a detailed fictional account of how he met Wario or became his partner. There is no sourced basis here for a shared childhood or origin story.

How their roles and origins differ

Waluigi Created by Camelot as Wario’s doubles partner; debuted in Mario Tennis 64. Nintendo DREAM WEB’s interview Presented as Luigi’s rival and Wario’s pal and accomplice; a family relationship with Wario is not established. Nintendo’s character profile

The simplest way to understand the pair is that they share a gameplay partnership and parallel roles as foils to the Mario brothers, but not a documented joint backstory. Wario’s origin is a Nintendo character-design story; Waluigi’s is a Camelot roster solution for doubles tennis. The creator interviews were published years after the characters’ debuts and note that character settings can change, so Nintendo’s current profile is the better guide to how it describes them now.
