An application obtains or selects media, negotiates a connection with the other endpoint, and uses ICE to find a working network route. The media then travels securely—directly when possible, or through a relay or forwarding server when the architecture requires it.
What is WebRTC live streaming?
WebRTC is not one streaming app or a single protocol. It is a coordinated set of browser-facing APIs and underlying protocols for real-time audio, video, and data exchange. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) describes its role this way: “The WebRTC 1.0 specification exposes an API to control protocols (defined within the IETF) necessary to establish real-time audio, video and data exchange.” The W3C WebRTC Recommendation, dated 13 March 2025, defines the browser APIs; IETF specifications define transport and related protocols.
In a live video session, software connects media tracks—such as camera and microphone tracks—to a peer connection, negotiates the session with the other endpoint, and sends or receives media after a viable route is found. “Peer” describes the endpoints in the connection; it does not guarantee that media travels directly between them. A relay or media-forwarding server may be part of the route.
How does real-time video work?
- Obtain or select media. The application gets local audio and video, commonly from a camera and microphone, or selects another media source. The WebRTC API represents media using objects such as
MediaStreamTrack. - Add tracks to a peer connection. The application adds the tracks to an
RTCPeerConnection, the browser object that manages sending and receiving media. - Exchange connection descriptions. The endpoints exchange offer-and-answer descriptions containing information used to negotiate media and connection details. WebRTC does not dictate how those messages are delivered; the application supplies signaling.
- Gather and exchange ICE candidates. Each endpoint gathers possible network routes, called candidates, and sends relevant candidates to the other through signaling. ICE tests compatible routes to find a usable candidate pair.
- Establish a route and carry media. When a route works, media can flow. Secure RTP carries audio and video; DTLS-SRTP is used for key exchange. Data channels use SCTP over DTLS over ICE, as specified in IETF RFC 8835.
What are signaling, ICE, STUN, and TURN?
Signaling exchanges setup messages
Signaling is the mechanism an application uses to pass offers, answers, and ICE candidates between endpoints. It is separate from the WebRTC media transport, and WebRTC does not require a particular signaling protocol. An application might use a WebSocket or its own signaling service. That service can route messages without interpreting their contents. See MDN’s signaling and video calling guide.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ICE searches for a viable network path
Interactive Connectivity Establishment (ICE) evaluates available connection options and tests candidate routes. It attempts to find a path the endpoints can use; a direct route is not guaranteed.
STUN helps discover network conditions
Session Traversal Utilities for NAT (STUN) helps an endpoint discover its network-facing address and restrictions. That information can help ICE test direct connectivity.

TURN relays media when needed
Traversal Using Relays around NAT (TURN) provides a relay route when a direct connection cannot be established. A WebRTC session can therefore use a server for media even though the technology is often described as peer-to-peer. MDN’s protocols overview covers ICE, STUN, TURN, and multi-party conferencing.
Direct peer delivery and SFU delivery
A direct peer connection is a natural fit for a small exchange between endpoints. For a group session, an application can instead use a Selective Forwarding Unit (SFU), an intermediary that receives and forwards participant streams to recipients. An SFU is an architectural choice, not a requirement of every WebRTC connection.

| Architecture | How media is distributed | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Direct peer delivery | Endpoints exchange media over a route ICE establishes; the route may be direct or relayed. | Consider the number of participants, recipient fan-out, whether a sender must upload separately to multiple recipients, and variation in recipients’ networks and media needs. |
| SFU-mediated delivery | An intermediary forwards participant streams to recipients. | Consider whether forwarding and distribution should be managed by an intermediary, as well as the operational needs of hosting signaling, TURN, and SFU services. |
There is no universal participant-count threshold at which an SFU becomes necessary: the appropriate design depends on the application and network conditions. The cited specifications and guides establish these as qualitative architecture considerations, not a fixed capacity, latency, bandwidth saving, or cost.
What WebRTC does—and does not—promise
- It defines APIs and protocols, not a complete hosted service. An application still needs to implement signaling and choose how it handles network traversal and, where relevant, multi-party distribution.
- It does not guarantee a direct media path. ICE may select a TURN relay, and an SFU may intentionally forward media.
- It does not establish a universal latency or quality figure. Network conditions and deployment choices affect the session; a fixed performance claim requires measurements for the specific system and conditions.
- It is not synonymous with every kind of live streaming. WebRTC describes real-time exchange between compatible endpoints. The term “live streaming” can refer to different delivery patterns, so identify whether a discussion means a call, a multi-party conference, or another distribution architecture.
WebRTC versus keeping a YouTube channel live
WebRTC explains real-time exchanges between compatible endpoints; it is not itself a service for looping uploaded video on a continuously live YouTube channel. If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs the loop in the cloud, so your computer does not need to stay on.
