There is no universal PC gaming layout, but WASD is the usual starting point: W/A/S/D for movement, Space for jumping, Shift for sprinting, Ctrl for crouching, E for interacting, R for reloading, and the mouse for aiming and primary actions. Treat that arrangement as a convention, then adjust it to your game, keyboard, hand, and accessibility needs.
Common PC gaming keys
The same key can do different things in different games. This chart describes common defaults in action games, not mandatory rules.

Check the in-game controls screen before relying on any chart. A title can have separate on-foot, vehicle, building, menu, character, or game-mode bindings.

Why WASD became the common layout
WASD puts movement under the left hand while the right hand controls the mouse. It also leaves nearby keys—Q, E, R, F, C, X, Z, Shift, Ctrl, and Space—available for actions without moving far from movement. The arrangement is designed around the physical positions on a QWERTY keyboard and is widely supported by PC games.

Epic’s Fortnite documentation shows the conventional position: middle finger on W, ring finger on A, index finger on D, and the right hand on the mouse (Epic’s WASD guide). Acer likewise describes W/A/S/D as the common forward, left, backward, and right arrangement (Acer’s keyboard explanation). This is a convenient default, not an ergonomic requirement. Another layout may suit your hand or game better.

Finger assignments are flexible. If a key forces an awkward stretch or causes fatigue, move it.
Controls by game genre
First-person and third-person action
These games commonly combine WASD movement with mouse camera control. Space, Shift, Ctrl, E, R, and nearby ability keys are frequent additions.
Battle royale
Battle royale games often use the same movement core, then add keys for building, inventory, pinging, equipment, vehicles, and abilities. Nearby keys and mouse side buttons become valuable because actions may be needed while moving.
MMOs
MMOs usually retain WASD movement but spread abilities across 1–0, Q, E, R, F, Z, X, C, mouse buttons, and modifier combinations. In this genre, R may be a combat ability rather than reload.

MOBAs
Traditional MOBAs rely heavily on mouse clicking for movement and targeting. That is changing: Riot’s current League of Legends input update documents optional WASD movement, expanded rebinding, champion-specific binds, and practice-tool testing (Riot’s WASD update).
Racing games
Racing games may use W for acceleration, S for braking or reversing, and A/D for steering, but the rest can be entirely different. EA’s F1 25 PC driving controls assign Space to gear-up or clutch and Shift to gear-down, demonstrating why a genre label is not enough (EA’s F1 25 driving controls).

Strategy, platformer, rhythm, and simulation games
Strategy games commonly use mouse selection, camera shortcuts, control groups, and number keys. Platformers and rhythm games may prefer arrows, Z/X, or a game-specific cluster. Simulators often need a large number of commands and may benefit from a full-size or programmable keyboard.
A sensible beginner layout
Use the game’s defaults for your first few sessions unless something is uncomfortable or repeatedly mispressed. This is a practical starting profile:

Consistency matters more than copying a professional player. A layout that works for one game, role, hand size, and mouse may be poor for another player.

How to choose personal keybinds
- Prioritize reachability. Frequent actions should be usable without releasing movement.
- Consider frequency. Put constantly used actions near WASD; leave rare commands farther away.
- Plan simultaneous inputs. Sprint should be reachable while holding W, and jump and crouch should be easy to press in succession.
- Balance finger workload. If the ring finger must hold A while reaching Shift, Ctrl, Q, and Z, move one action to C, V, Alt, or a mouse button.
- Prevent accidental presses. Keep reload and destructive actions away from keys you hit unintentionally.
- Keep a consistent grammar. Across games, E can mean interact, R reload, F melee, Q quick ability, Shift sprint, Ctrl/C crouch, and Space jump—unless the genre makes another meaning more useful.
Use mouse side buttons selectively
Side buttons can hold melee, an ability, ping, push-to-talk, weapon switching, crouch, or a frequently used item. Do not move everything to the mouse: too many buttons can crowd the right hand and make them harder to identify consistently.

ESDF
ESDF gives the left hand more keys on the left side and can make Q, A, Z, Shift, and Ctrl easier to reach. Its drawback is compatibility: tutorials and default prompts often assume WASD, so switching between games may require more rebinding.
Arrow keys
Arrows are useful for left-handed players, keyboard-only games, or anyone who prefers a separated directional cluster. They leave fewer nearby keys for abilities and may force the other hand into an inconvenient position.
IJKL and custom clusters
IJKL or another cluster is valid when it fits your desk, hand, or accessibility setup. The best layout is the one you can press accurately and repeatedly without strain.
Controller
A controller can be more comfortable for driving, platformers, sports games, and titles designed around analog movement. Keyboard and mouse provide more discrete buttons and mouse aiming. Neither is superior for every genre or player.

How to change gaming keys
- Open the game.
- Choose Settings, Options, or a similar menu.
- Open Controls, Keyboard, Keyboard and Mouse, Input, or Keybinds.
- Select the action you want to change.
- Press the desired keyboard key or mouse button.
- Apply, save, or confirm the change.
- Test it in a tutorial, practice range, training mode, or low-stakes match.
- Restore defaults if a conflict makes the game difficult to control, then rebind one action at a time.
Labels and options vary by title, platform, edition, and accessibility implementation. Some games provide separate profiles, vehicle controls, character-specific binds, or cloud-synchronized settings.

QWERTY, QWERTZ, and AZERTY
WASD advice assumes QWERTY. QWERTZ swaps Y and Z, while AZERTY rearranges several letter rows. Non-Latin and compact layouts can also move familiar keys. Prioritize the physical locations you can reach reliably, not the printed letter name. EA states that its F1 25 PC controls support QWERTY, QWERTZ, and AZERTY examples (EA’s layout documentation).
Rollover and simultaneous key presses
A keyboard’s matrix, firmware, connection, and exact key combination determine whether several keys register together. “Anti-ghosting,” key rollover, and N-key rollover are related terms, but N-key rollover should not be read as a guarantee that every practical combination will work on every keyboard. Riot notes that some laptop keyboards have limited simultaneous-key handling (Riot’s input notes).
If W plus Shift, Space, and another action fails, test a different combination, try an external keyboard or another USB port, update firmware only from the manufacturer, and rebind the action. A physical key fault or game bug is also possible.
Keyboard size
- Full-size: Includes a number pad and suits simulators, MMOs, and productivity, but uses more desk space.
- Tenkeyless: Removes the number pad and leaves more room for the mouse.
- 75%: Compact while retaining many navigation controls.
- 60%: Saves space but may place arrows, function keys, and navigation commands behind Fn layers.
- Laptop: Portable, but spacing, travel, and rollover can vary.
A smaller keyboard does not automatically improve play. Its usual benefit is desk space, especially for low-sensitivity mouse users.

Special gaming features
Some current keyboards offer adjustable actuation, rapid trigger, analog input, programmable profiles, or dual-function keys. Razer lists these features for the Huntsman V3 Pro line (Razer’s product page). They are optional hardware features, not prerequisites for ordinary WASD gaming, and a game or tournament may restrict particular input behaviors.
Accessibility and comfort
- Use full rebinding where available.
- Choose toggle sprint, crouch, or aim instead of hold controls when that reduces fatigue.
- Move Shift, Ctrl, or Space to keys your hand can reach comfortably.
- Use mouse side buttons, foot switches, adaptive controllers, or one-handed keyboards if appropriate.
- Reduce simultaneous holds and finger travel.
- Consider larger keycaps, high-contrast legends, split keyboards, or a layout designed around your range of motion.
External remapping software can help, but check the game’s terms and anti-cheat policy. A one-to-one remap is not the same as a macro that performs several actions, and competitive rules differ by game and tournament.
Troubleshooting mismatched controls
“My keys do not match the guide”
The game may use another preset, detect controller mode, have a different keyboard language, or refer to another platform or version. Open the controls menu, select the correct input device, restore defaults, confirm the operating-system layout, and rebind one action at a time.

Possible causes include rollover limits, a laptop matrix, firmware behavior, a game input bug, or a failing key. Test another combination and an external keyboard, then rebind the action to a different key or mouse button.
“Ctrl or Space is uncomfortable”
Try C, V, Left Alt, a mouse side button, a toggle setting, or another thumb-accessible key. Split-spacebar remapping exists on some keyboards but is not a universal feature (PC Gamer’s split-spacebar report).
Bottom line
Start with WASD, Space, Shift, Ctrl, E, R, and mouse controls because those conventions transfer well across many PC action games. Keep the defaults if they feel comfortable; otherwise change the keys that are hard to reach, overloaded, or incompatible with your keyboard. Comfort, reliable combinations, and consistent practice matter more than reproducing someone else’s binds.
