Enshrouded can feel adrift in the survival genre because it asks players to read it as several kinds of game at once: survival adventure, action RPG, open-world exploration and large-scale building sandbox. That blend is also its clearest appeal. The evidence around its January 2024 launch does not show that reviewers or players broadly rejected its identity; it shows a deliberately evolving Early Access game whose focus is still a fair question.
Why Enshrouded’s genre identity can feel diffuse
Keen Games launched Enshrouded on Steam Early Access on January 24, 2024. The studio described it as an action role-playing game with survival elements, extensive crafting and building, and a large editable voxel world. It supports solo play and co-op for up to 16 players. Those are not minor extras attached to one narrow loop: they put combat, character progression, exploration, construction and survival under the same roof.
That breadth creates the tension in the “adrift” framing. A player arriving for a survival game may expect the pressure of staying alive and managing scarce resources to define most decisions. Someone drawn by the action-RPG label may instead focus on skills, equipment, enemies and bosses. A builder may spend the bulk of a session shaping a settlement and the surrounding terrain. The official launch description foregrounds all of these possibilities, but the available launch material does not establish a single one as the universally dominant identity.
The world-editing premise makes the combination particularly visible. Construction is not simply a separate menu activity: the game presents an editable voxel environment as a central part of its setting and systems. Meanwhile, the Steam description points to combat against corrupted factions and bosses, character roles and skills, equipment crafting, and exploration. The result is a game with several strong genre signals rather than a cleanly bounded survival formula.

What kind of survival game is Enshrouded?
A survival adventure in a divided world
Keen Games said development began four years before launch with an idea for an adventure and survival game set in a world divided between light and darkness. That origin helps explain why the game’s pitch stretches beyond survival systems alone: its framing is an adventure, not only a test of endurance.
An action RPG with progression and combat
The action-RPG side gives players character roles and skills, equipment to craft, and enemies and bosses to fight. Those systems can make the experience feel more like a combat-led RPG than a survival simulator, depending on what a player prioritizes. The studio’s official description calls it an action role-playing game, while the Steam page layers survival, exploration and building into that broader pitch.
A building and crafting sandbox
Building is substantial enough to shape the game’s identity on its own. Players can construct in a massive, editable voxel world, using crafted resources and building materials. This gives creative play a prominent place alongside combat and exploration, rather than treating it as a peripheral base-management feature.
Solo or large-group co-op
The game can be played alone or with up to 16 players in co-op. That range changes the texture of its systems: solo players may encounter the world as a personal survival-and-adventure progression, while a group can divide attention among exploration, combat, crafting and building. The supported player count describes an option, not a claim that every activity or balance decision is designed around a full group.

On January 29, 2024, Keen Games announced that Enshrouded had reached over one million players in its first four days. That is a developer-reported player milestone, not a sales total and not a measure of whether the game’s genre identity was clear to players.
Rank #2
Steam’s English-language review snapshot checked on October 8, 2026 showed 49,352 reviews overall, 86% positive, and 843 recent reviews, 80% positive. These are live store-page figures and can change. The overall and recent percentages describe different review windows, and neither is a frozen record of launch reception. They also cannot settle whether the game is too diffuse in its design: positive reception and an open question about genre focus can coexist.
Accordingly, “adrift” works best as a critical question about the game’s design, not as a claim of established critical consensus. The available material does not establish that launch reviewers collectively thought Enshrouded lacked an identity, or that players broadly rejected its mixture of systems.
Early Access was part of the game’s intended direction
Keen Games said it chose Early Access to involve the community in shaping the game’s vision. In its January 2024 launch announcement, the studio wrote: “We chose Early Access because we wanted to get the community’s input to help us steer our vision of the game, and make Enshrouded the best game it can be.” The Steam Early Access statement similarly says the developers are counting on community involvement.

Its listed plans include new biomes, enemies, locations, resources, recipes, equipment and weapons, skills, furniture, and building materials. Those are stated plans, not proof that each item was delivered.
The studio’s launch announcement also said the team had been adding content, polishing the game, optimizing performance and fixing issues after the Steam Next Fest demo. It identified optimization and issue resolution as immediate priorities. This is relevant context for a launch-era judgment: Early Access meant the game was being presented as playable while still subject to continued refinement, not as a finished statement of its long-term form.

Where the Early Access schedule stood in October 2026
As of October 8, 2026, Steam listed October 15, 2026 as the planned date for leaving Early Access. That date was still in the future on October 8; it is a scheduled exit, not evidence that the 1.0 release had already shipped.
PC Gamer reported on January 21, 2026 that Keen Games had moved its planned 1.0 window to fall 2026 and outlined roadmap work involving new areas, combat depth and enemy behavior, optimization, and onboarding. The roadmap indicates areas the studio intended to address, but it does not establish that those changes had been completed by the report date. Steam’s Early Access notice says the game is incomplete and may change, which is an important distinction for anyone assessing its current identity.
Is Enshrouded’s breadth a strength or a weakness?
It depends on what a player wants from a survival game. The combination can be a strength for someone who wants combat progression, exploration, collaborative play and building in one world. It can feel unfocused to someone looking for a survival loop whose resource pressure and staying-alive systems consistently take center stage. The available source material does not provide a systematic comparison with other survival games or enough evidence to declare one interpretation the consensus.
- Look at the action-RPG side if skills, equipment, enemies and bosses are the main draw.
- Look at construction and crafting if editing the voxel world and building are central to the appeal.
- Consider the play format if solo progression versus a group of up to 16 players matters to your plans.
- Treat the game as evolving if your purchase decision depends on a finished 1.0 version or on roadmap changes already being delivered.
Its early access launch was not demonstrably a genre failure. It was the launch of an intentionally broad survival action RPG whose systems pull in several directions—and an Early Access project that asked its community to help shape which direction would matter most.
