For 2026–27, Mohamed Diawara is the Knicks’ clearest second-year breakout candidate—but his opportunity is not a guaranteed rotation spot. Fans should track whether he earns steady minutes, sustains his outside shooting, fits at power forward and gains the coach’s trust in consequential games.
Why Diawara is the player to watch
The NBA’s 2026–27 Knicks season preview, updated September 22, 2026, describes New York as a veteran team and identifies 21-year-old Diawara as perhaps its only player under 25 with a good chance of regular rotation minutes. Selected in the second round, he appeared as a rookie in 2025–26 and made 36.9% of his three-point attempts.
That makes him a candidate to monitor, not a player whose leap is assured. As preview author John Schuhmann puts it: “If the latter shows improvement in Year 2, he’s a valuable piece.” The “latter” is Diawara.
Four signals that would make a breakout credible
1. Minutes that last
Watch whether Diawara appears regularly and whether his playing time holds beyond brief stretches or injury-driven openings. A sustained role would be more meaningful than a temporary increase in minutes; the preview anticipates opportunities but does not say he already has a rotation job.

2. Three-point shooting that carries over
His 36.9% rookie mark is a useful baseline, not a forecast. The key is whether he continues to make enough threes as defenses adjust, and whether those shots fit naturally into the offense rather than coming only in unusually favorable situations.
3. A useful fit at power forward
The preview points to a possible frontcourt opening: New York can use Karl-Anthony Towns at power forward alongside another big, or play smaller. It identifies OG Anunoby and Diawara as the roster’s only true fours. Watch whether Diawara can contribute in those power-forward minutes, including lineups with Towns at center, and whether he can also fit into smaller groups. The preview establishes this role context, but does not provide a detailed scouting assessment of Diawara’s skills.

4. Trust in meaningful games
Diawara was outside the Knicks’ playoff rotation last spring. A notable step would be earning the coach’s trust in regular-season games that matter, then making a case for postseason minutes. The preview presents playoff action as a possibility, not an expectation—particularly if the roster is healthy.

The Knicks’ veteran makeup makes available minutes especially important: a young player can develop, but still have limited chances if established players occupy the rotation. The preview cites a lack of frontcourt depth as a reason Diawara may get regular-season opportunities, while leaving open the possibility that he sees little postseason action with a healthy roster.

Pacôme Dadiet is another young forward, but the preview’s specific breakout framing is about Diawara. The official Knicks roster page lists Dadiet as a second-year player and reports 2025–26 averages of 1.7 points, 0.4 assists and 0.9 rebounds across 29 games. Those figures show limited production; they do not make Dadiet the preview’s named breakout candidate.
