There is no single best Y-level for finding amethyst geodes. Minecraft’s official guide gives a generation range of Y=-58 to Y=+30, but does not identify a height with better odds. Search caves and mine within that range, watching for exposed geode walls.
Where amethyst geodes generate
Minecraft’s official amethyst geode guide, published October 20, 2025, says geodes generate between Y=-58 and Y=+30. It does not publish a height-by-height probability distribution or name an optimal level, so advice to target one exact Y as the best level is not supported by that guidance.
The guide estimates about one geode per 24 chunks. That is an approximate overall frequency, not a guarantee that every 24th chunk you explore will contain one, and it should not be read as a separate probability for each Y-level.
How to search
Explore caves and exposed walls
Geodes can be exposed in cave or canyon walls, so check visible rock faces as you explore rather than relying only on a narrow, level tunnel. The official guide does not quantify whether cave exploration or mining finds geodes faster.

Mine within the full range
If you are mining, stay within Y=-58 to Y=+30 rather than treating one level as a proven hotspot. The guide’s practical advice is to keep mining and count yourself lucky when you encounter one.
How to recognize a geode
Look for smooth black basalt on the outside and a white calcite layer beneath it. Amethyst blocks and crystals are inside. A glimpse of the basalt or calcite in a cave wall can be a reason to investigate further.

Does Java or Bedrock have a better level?
The available official guidance does not give a Java-versus-Bedrock comparison or a separate height-specific probability curve. Microsoft’s Bedrock geode feature documentation, last updated October 24, 2023, describes configurable feature components such as inner, middle, and outer layers, maximum radius, and crack-generation settings. That technical configuration reference does not establish a best survival-world Y-level or show that players can change those settings in an ordinary world.
