A CRPG is a computer role-playing game; an action RPG emphasizes real-time decisions and direct control. Those labels are not opposites: a game can be both.
What makes a game an RPG?
There is no single feature that settles every argument about whether a game is an RPG. In their chapter “Definitions of Role-Playing Games,” José P. Zagal and Sebastian Deterding describe RPG as a social category whose meaning varies across communities. They identify recurring traits rather than a universal checklist: players create or enact characters in a fictional world, pursue goals through their choices, and use rules to structure actions. Character progression and rules for resolving combat are common, but neither is required in every form. Zagal and Deterding’s chapter places tabletop RPGs, live-action role-playing, CRPGs and multiplayer online RPGs within this broader family.
That variety is why familiar features are clues, not pass-or-fail tests. A game need not have turn-based combat, a party, a fantasy setting, extensive dialogue or a conventional leveling system to be an RPG. The more useful question is how much the player’s role, character systems, choices and rules shape the experience.
What is a CRPG?
CRPG means computer role-playing game. It names a recognized form of RPG, not a fixed set of mechanics or presentation choices. The label alone does not tell you whether a game has a top-down camera, turn-based combat, a controllable party or real-time action.

RPG forms share historical roots in tabletop Dungeons & Dragons, but developed different styles and communities. The computer-based form is one branch of that wider history, rather than a synonym for a particular combat system.
What makes an action RPG different?
Action RPG usually describes how play feels and unfolds: the player makes decisions and executes actions in real time, directly controlling a character rather than relying on a menu or tactical interface to separate them from the action. Action RPGs often put combat near the center of play and focus on one character, though these are tendencies, not requirements.

As Xbox Wire Staff put it in its 2015 overview of action RPGs, “It’s difficult to specifically define, or rather delineate, the characteristics of the action-RPG versus a traditional RPG, but we can say a few things for certain.” The distinction is useful, but its edges are not rigid.
CRPG vs. action RPG: the useful distinctions
These terms answer different questions. CRPG points to the computer-mediated RPG form; action RPG points to real-time play and direct control. They can overlap. To understand a particular game, look at several dimensions instead of treating the labels as mutually exclusive categories.

| Dimension | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Control and timing | Are actions chosen through menus or a tactical interface, or executed through continuous real-time control? Action RPGs typically emphasize the latter. |
| Where challenge sits | Does success lean more on character statistics, builds and rules, on timing and direct execution, or on a mixture? This is a spectrum, not a genre law. |
| Party or individual | Does the player manage a party or primarily control one character? Action RPGs often focus on an individual, but a party is not an exclusion test. |
| Role and character systems | How much do creating or developing a character, pursuing player-defined goals and rule-governed actions shape play? These features recur across RPG forms. |
| Combat emphasis | Is combat the main activity or one part of a broader role-playing experience? Action RPGs tend to foreground combat. |
Examples show how the labels can blur
Examples illustrate conventions without defining the whole genre. Xbox Wire’s historical overview identifies the 1980s games Rogue and Dragon Slayer as influential in the development of action-RPG conventions. It describes Diablo (1997) as a PC action RPG built around combat, randomized dungeons and loot. Its discussion of Dark Souls points to the combination of intricate combat, detailed character customization and action-based controls: direct action does not erase character-building systems.
Rather than asking whether one feature “makes” a game an RPG, consider the balance: how important is inhabiting and developing a role, how do rules shape what the character can do, and how much does success depend on real-time execution? That approach accommodates games that blend conventions without forcing a false either-or answer.
