Episodes connect the label with lore and extraordinary events, but they do not establish one universal rule for who qualifies or how Legendary Pokémon rank against one another.
What does “Legendary” mean in the anime?
The anime uses “Legendary” as a category, but does not lay out a single definition based on strength, rarity, origin, or a particular feat. An official episode summary, for example, calls Solgaleo “one of the Legendary Pokémon of Alola.” In the story, Nebby becomes Solgaleo after a ritual involving the Island Guardians. That establishes the label for Solgaleo in this context; it does not give viewers a universal eligibility test. The Pokémon Company International’s Season 21 episode summary describes the event.
Pokémon Support says creators intend questions not answered in the games, animated movies, or TV shows to be left to fans’ imaginations and interpretations. Its guidance is useful here: where the anime does not define a rule, an interpretation should not be presented as official canon. Pokémon Support updated this guidance on January 30, 2026.
Is a Legendary Pokémon the same as a Mythical Pokémon?
No. Official anime summaries use Legendary and Mythical as distinct labels. The summary for “Showdown at the Gates of Warp!” identifies Dialga and Palkia as Legendary Pokémon and Arceus as Mythical. Their extraordinary status or importance in the same crisis does not erase that distinction. The Pokémon Company International’s Season 24 summary uses both terms.

How should you understand a Legendary Pokémon’s power?
Power in an anime episode is best understood through what the story shows that Pokémon doing, the scale of the event, and the circumstances around it. It is not a standardized measurement. Solgaleo’s story connects its ability to open an Ultra Wormhole with a new Z-Move. In another story, Arceus briefly quells a conflict involving Dialga and Palkia. Those are significant narrative feats, but they do not provide comparable scores or prove a permanent ranking across the series. The Solgaleo episode summary and the Dialga, Palkia, and Arceus summary describe those events.
- Abilities: What the episode attributes to the Pokémon, such as opening a wormhole.
- Scale: The people, places, or phenomena affected by the event.
- Context: Any ritual, move, crisis, or other condition tied to what happens.
Keeping those details attached to a feat matters. An intervention in one crisis cannot, on its own, show that a Pokémon would always defeat another under different conditions.

What can lore tell us—and what can’t it prove?
Regional myths help explain how a story presents a Pokémon, but mythology is not itself a universal definition of Legendary status. The official Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl story page, for example, discusses Sinnoh lore involving beings associated with controlling time and distorting space. This is game-site material, so it offers cross-franchise context, not a rule for the anime. The official Sinnoh story page describes that lore.
For an anime claim, distinguish what an episode explicitly calls a Pokémon from what the surrounding legend suggests. The first supports a statement about the category in that source; the second helps interpret the story, but should not be turned into an official classification rule.

Can you rank Legendary Pokémon by power?
The official summaries cited here do not provide a shared power scale or numerical rankings. Solgaleo’s wormhole feat and Arceus’s intervention occur in different stories and circumstances, so they are not equivalent measurements. A careful comparison should match the kind of evidence: stated abilities with stated abilities, or outcomes with outcomes, while naming the region, episode, and conditions.
| Lens | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Official category in an episode or franchise source | Whether that source calls a Pokémon Legendary or Mythical. | A consistent numerical ranking. |
| In-story lore and demonstrated feats | What the story says a Pokémon represents or does in that context. | A universal eligibility rule or a cross-series power hierarchy. |
No named statistic or official comparative dataset for an anime-wide Legendary power ranking is established by these sources. Game statistics should not be presented as measurements of anime strength.
