What Makes a Puzzle Game a Metroidvania? Exploration, Backtracking, and Progression

A puzzle game becomes Metroidvania-like when solving its puzzles changes access across a connected world and makes exploration or revisiting worthwhile.

A puzzle game feels like a Metroidvania when its puzzles connect to a larger loop of exploration and access: you encounter a barrier, gain a tool or insight, then use it to reach new places or revisit old ones in a newly meaningful way. Solving puzzles alone is not enough; the defining feature is how puzzle-solving changes where you can go in an interconnected world.

What makes a puzzle game a Metroidvania?

There is no universal checklist or official threshold for the genre. A useful working definition is a connected world in which routes open as the player gains abilities, items, or knowledge. The player explores, encounters a meaningful obstacle, finds a way to overcome it, and applies that new capability elsewhere. This is the recurring structure described by developers and design analyses, rather than a formal genre rule.

Koji Igarashi, the producer and designer associated with Castlevania, describes the pattern as “metroidvania refers to exploration through the use of a gradually-expanding toolset — players explore and then double back once they learn to reach an area they couldn’t before.” (Game Developer, March 21, 2014.) For a puzzle-focused game, the expanding toolset can include not only a physical ability or item but also knowledge of how a system works.

The progression loop: explore, unlock, return

  1. Explore: Move through connected areas and notice routes, mechanisms, or barriers that cannot yet be passed.
  2. Form a question: Work out what kind of capability or understanding might be missing. A clear obstacle can give the player a useful lead without spelling out the solution.
  3. Gain a capability or insight: Find an upgrade, tool, key, or piece of knowledge that changes what the player can do.
  4. Apply it: Open a route, alter an environmental system, or revisit a known place and see new possibilities there.

The crucial link is cause and effect: the discovery changes access. A reward that only raises a score or makes the character stronger can support general progression, but by itself it does not create the exploration-and-return structure described here. Research on Metroidvania design likewise discusses ability and inventory gates alongside revisits to places that become newly explorable (SBGames, “A Framework for Metroidvania Games,” 2020).

How puzzles fit into the world

Puzzles can do more than occupy rooms between action sequences. They can serve as gates to new areas, teach a rule the player later uses elsewhere, or change an environmental system so that the map offers different routes. A puzzle can also reward the player with information rather than a conventional key: once the player understands a mechanism, a previously confusing barrier may become solvable.

In Recompile, designer Phi Dinh describes puzzles and hacking as distinct playstyles within a connected, ability-gated world; those approaches can affect the paths a player takes (Game Developer, March 14, 2019). The example illustrates why “puzzle game” and “Metroidvania” are not competing labels: puzzles can be part of the progression system that binds exploration together.

When a puzzle game does not feel like a Metroidvania

A puzzle adventure made of isolated rooms, each solved once before moving to the next, may be a satisfying puzzle game without using the interconnected gating and revisitation central to this Metroidvania description. It is not the presence or difficulty of puzzles that decides the fit. Ask whether solving them meaningfully changes access across a connected world.

Some games sit between categories. If a map is mostly linear but occasional puzzle knowledge unlocks an earlier passage, or if the world is connected but revisits are optional, calling it Metroidvania-like may be more helpful than arguing over a strict yes-or-no boundary. The label describes a cluster of conventions, not a settled measurement.

What to look for when comparing puzzle-focused Metroidvanias

  • Map connections: Do discoveries affect distant areas or places the player has already visited, or are spaces mostly self-contained?
  • Gate types: Are routes opened by abilities, items, puzzle knowledge, or a mix of these?
  • Value of revisits: Does returning reveal a new option, a changed puzzle, or a newly reachable passage? Or does it mostly repeat travel without adding information?
  • Barrier feedback: Can players recognize that a route is blocked and remember where it is? There is no single required signaling method; the important question is whether exploration remains understandable.
  • Travel and risk: Movement pace, save-point placement, difficulty, and the player’s motivation can shape how rewarding or costly it feels to explore. These choices influence the experience, but none alone defines the genre.

These distinctions reflect recurring design discussions: exploration and backtracking, for example, are conventions, but the sources do not establish that every game must require extensive backtracking. The Bandai Namco Entertainment America and Denfaminicogamer developer roundtable also discusses how movement tempo, save points, and risk-reward affect the experience of exploring.

Why the label remains flexible

The term “Metroidvania” became a familiar genre label through years of game design and player use, rather than through a single binding definition. In a 2025 PLAYISM roundtable, Igarashi remarked, “Then after some time, the Metroidvania name stuck and it became a staple video game genre.” (PLAYISM, January 16, 2025.) That history helps explain why reasonable readers may disagree about borderline games.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

For a puzzle game, the most useful test is practical: do its puzzles, tools, or insights help the player understand and open a connected world? If they do, “puzzle Metroidvania” or “Metroidvania-like puzzle game” communicates more than either label alone. If puzzles are isolated challenges with no broader effect on routes or revisits, the Metroidvania label is less informative.
