Viewers may subscribe to a 24/7 YouTube music stream because it reliably fits a mood or routine—and, for some, because the live channel and its chat feel like a shared place. The evidence supports both usefulness and social connection as plausible reasons, but no representative study establishes which factor drives subscriptions to these streams or how much continuous availability changes subscription rates.
Music that fits a mood or task gives viewers a reason to return
A continuous stream can be useful without demanding a viewer’s full attention. Someone may put on lo-fi music to relax, focus on work or study, or simply enjoy the music. When a channel fits that recurring occasion, it may become part of a routine.
A 2025 exploratory student paper, Lo-fi Hip Hop and Community in YouTube Comments, found that respondents most often selected “relax/chill out,” “focus on their tasks,” and “enjoy the music” among their top listening criteria. The paper also reported that 40 percent of its respondents used YouTube most frequently for lo-fi hip-hop. That figure describes the paper’s sample—not all YouTube music listeners, and not a subscription rate. Read the study.
Listening, watching, returning, and subscribing are different behaviors. A listener might use a stream as background music without ever subscribing. The study’s findings help describe why some people choose lo-fi music; they do not show that those motives convert listeners into subscribers.

Liveness can make a stream feel more socially present
Knowing that a performance is happening live can change how viewers experience it. A 2026 Journal of Marketing study by Duani, Barasch, and Ward compared live and equivalent or identical prerecorded amateur music performances. It found that perceived liveness increased viewers’ sense of presence and social connection; those feelings were linked to enjoyment, continued watching, and intentions to follow, subscribe, or join a fan community. This supports a general live-viewing mechanism, not a direct finding about around-the-clock ambient music stations. It does not establish that liveness is the main reason people subscribe to a 24/7 channel or predict conversion for a particular stream.

Chat can turn background listening into a shared experience
Live chat offers a social layer that a static playlist does not. Viewers can talk with one another and the creator while listening; some may value that sense of company even when the music remains in the background.
YouTube Help describes the platform’s rationale this way: “Having a shared experience, like watching a live stream, helps build a deeper sense of community between creator and viewer.” It also says, “Live chat helps amplify that sense of community for viewers. They get to interact more, and have real time conversations with each other and their favorite creators.” These are YouTube’s descriptions of its features, not proof that chat causes subscriptions in every genre. Other studies give context, with limits. An exploratory study of eight YouTube music broadcasts during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown examined comments for themes including social cohesion, intercultural understanding, and community resilience. Its small case set and unusual lockdown context do not establish what viewers generally seek in today’s always-on stations. An interview-based study of V Live music fans identified social and interpersonal motives, but celebrity fandom differs from an ambient radio stream. Neither tells us how common these motives are among 24/7 music listeners.
Atmosphere and companionship may make a channel feel familiar
In interviews with regular users of the ChilledCow station, an exploratory study identified the animation and music as elements of the experience. That offers a way to think about how a channel’s sound and visual setting might feel companionable or distinctive, but qualitative interviews cannot show how prevalent those feelings are across viewers.

For a background-music channel, the atmosphere may matter alongside the tracks: a consistent visual identity and a familiar listening environment can help make the stream recognizable. That is a reasonable creator consideration, not a measured subscription formula.

The most defensible explanation is a combination: musical fit and dependable usefulness may encourage repeat listening, while liveness, chat, and atmosphere can give some viewers a further reason to feel connected to the channel. YouTube for Artists notes that “Some of your most dedicated fans subscribe to your channel to stay close to the music.” That statement is about dedicated fans broadly, not a measured result for ambient streams. - A stream that serves a recurring mood or task can be useful to a listener, but usefulness alone does not mean the person will subscribe.
- A live status and active chat may create a sense of presence or community for viewers who want it; people using music purely as background may not participate.
- There is no representative subscription-conversion statistic here for 24/7 YouTube music streams, and no established estimate of how much being available around the clock changes subscription likelihood.
For creators: make the experience dependable, and clear the music rights
If the goal is a channel people can return to, focus on a consistent musical fit and a listening experience that works for the intended occasion. Treat chat as an optional community layer rather than assuming every listener wants interaction. Rights are a practical constraint, not a growth tactic. YouTube for Artists advises creators to coordinate with a label or distributor before using copyright-protected music in a livestream. Having permission to use a track is distinct from whether the stream’s format or content will build an audience.
