Parents in the United States should treat Grand Theft Auto VI as an adult-oriented game: the current ESRB listing rates it M for Mature 17+ and names several categories of mature content, including strong sexual content, nudity, intense violence, and drug and alcohol use. Political satire is also part of the game’s presentation, but public reporting describes the developers’ approach—not a complete list of jokes, targets, or scenes.
What is GTA VI rated?
The current US ESRB listing rates Grand Theft Auto VI M for Mature 17+ and lists these content descriptors:
- Blood and Gore
- Intense Violence
- Mature Humor
- Nudity
- Strong Language
- Strong Sexual Content
- Use of Drugs and Alcohol
- In-Game Purchases
The ESRB rating guide says M-rated games may include intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, and/or strong language. These labels are category-level warnings, not a scene-by-scene account; they do not establish how often a theme appears, its context, or its severity in a particular scene.
What do we know about the political satire?
Reporting on Rockstar staff interviews describes a heightened, exaggerated version of contemporary life. PC Gamer reports that the game’s satirical world includes radio talk shows, advertisements, and a robovoiced political campaign call. Rockstar writing director James Horton described overhearing fragments of conversations while moving through a busy city; senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries said the world should be “more over the top, more insane, more in your face.” These comments offer a sense of the intended tone, not a complete inventory of content. - This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19.
- Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
GamesRadar+ reports Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson saying the studio tries to choose satirical subjects that will remain relevant over a long development cycle. He said very specific political issues or memes can date quickly. That is a reported creative intention, not a guarantee that the game avoids current references. The public reporting does not establish which real political groups, people, or events are targeted across the game. (GamesRadar+)
The ESRB lists “Mature Humor” but does not elaborate on political satire. Neither the rating nor the developers’ reported comments can tell parents exactly what a particular joke targets or how it is presented.

How to use the rating when deciding
- Check the rating for your region. The M for Mature 17+ classification cited here is the current US ESRB rating. Ratings can differ in other countries, so consult the local rating board for a household outside the United States.
- Consider every descriptor, not just the age label. The ESRB lists violence, gore, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, drugs and alcohol, mature humor, and in-game purchases. Decide whether those categories fit your child and your household’s rules.
- Do not rely on the rating for scene-level detail. The listing does not provide a complete walkthrough or quantify the frequency of each theme. If your decision depends on specific scenes or jokes, look for a thorough post-release content guide or review.
Platform and physical-format details
Platform and edition matter if you are considering a purchase. PlayStation describes the game as a single-player experience for PS5 and says it is not playable on PS4. The ESRB listing names PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. Rockstar’s physical code-in-box listing says it includes a download code and no disc, so “physical” does not mean the game comes on a disc. Check the platform, edition, region, and availability at the time of purchase. (PlayStation; Rockstar Store)

The PlayStation US page’s age-rating FAQ says ratings were unconfirmed when that text was written. That statement conflicts with the current ESRB entry, which gives the US game an M for Mature 17+ rating. For the current US classification, rely on the ESRB listing rather than the stale FAQ text.
