QSSR is Sony’s new AI-guided upscaling option for standard PS5, and the first supported games are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Sony says it improves image detail and stability; a report summarizing Digital Foundry’s testing also describes clearer fine detail in several scenes, alongside a higher performance cost than Insomniac’s temporal upscaler. There are no published numerical benchmarks yet, so the reported gains should be read as qualitative rather than a guaranteed frame-rate or resolution improvement.
What QSSR is
QSSR, or Quick Spectral Super Resolution, is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s AI-guided upscaling library for standard PlayStation 5. Upscaling reconstructs an output image from a lower-resolution rendered image. Sony says QSSR is built around a streamlined neural network and an implementation tuned for PS5 hardware, and traces its development to Project Amethyst, Sony’s graphics collaboration with AMD. Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement describes QSSR as a new performance tier of AI upscaling.
It is a feature developers integrate into individual games, not a system-wide switch that automatically changes every PS5 title. Sony says the library will be made broadly available to PlayStation developers, but has not announced a title-by-title roadmap.
Which games support QSSR?
Sony said these two games were patched on October 1, 2026 to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Marvel’s Wolverine
- Ghost of Yōtei
This is the availability Sony stated in its announcement; regional rollout timing and the games’ individual patch notes have not been independently confirmed here. Sony has not named other supported games. Claims that a future title such as GTA VI will use QSSR remain speculation unless its publisher or developer confirms support.
Does QSSR improve image quality?
Sony says QSSR improves image detail and stability. The developers of the two launch games also praise its clarity: Mike Fitzgerald, Insomniac Games’ Head of Technology, said it adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” in environments, while Jasmin Patry, Sucker Punch Productions’ Lead Rendering Engineer, said it resolves fine details with a level of temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. These are statements from the studios published by Sony, not independent benchmark results.

A Tech4Gamers report summarizing Digital Foundry’s analysis of Marvel’s Wolverine describes more visible detail with QSSR than with Insomniac’s temporal upscaler, IGTI. The cited examples include distant objects, foliage, character hair, water and reflections; the report also notes less ghosting in its water comparison. Those are reported observations from particular scenes, not a quantified result that establishes the same improvement in every game or image.
QSSR versus Insomniac’s temporal upscaler
| Comparison | What is reported |
|---|---|
| Fine detail | Tech4Gamers’ summary of Digital Foundry’s Marvel’s Wolverine testing describes clearer distant geometry, foliage and hair with QSSR. |
| Stability and artifacts | Sony and its launch-game partners emphasize stability and clarity; the report says QSSR reduces ghosting visible in a water comparison. |
| Performance cost | The report says QSSR has a greater performance cost than IGTI, but gives no measured amount. |
| Scope of evidence | The available comparison is a qualitative report about Marvel’s Wolverine, not a published numerical benchmark across games. |
The performance trade-off matters because a sharper reconstruction is not automatically the best choice for every player or graphics mode. Sony has not published QSSR figures for frame rate, latency, output resolution or image quality, and the secondary report provides no numerical cost. The available evidence therefore does not tell players how large the performance difference is in practice.

How QSSR relates to PS5 Pro’s PSSR
QSSR is intended for standard PS5. Sony positions PSSR as the gold-standard upscaling option for PS5 Pro; the company does not describe QSSR as making standard PS5 equivalent to the Pro console. Tech4Gamers’ account characterizes PSSR as more capable and less costly in performance, while suggesting hardware differences may help explain that cost. That hardware explanation is a possibility, not an established causal finding.
Sony’s announcement does not provide a detailed hardware or API matrix, supported resolution modes, or a numerical comparison between QSSR and PSSR. The useful distinction is platform and intent: QSSR brings a tailored AI-upscaling option to standard PS5, while PSSR remains Sony’s higher-tier choice for PS5 Pro.
