Questionable means the team is uncertain whether a player will play in its next game. It does not mean the player is ruled out, and the NFL does not assign the label a fixed percentage chance of playing.
What does “questionable” mean in football?
The NFL’s 2017 Injury Report Policy defines “Questionable” as “Uncertain if player will play.” The Game Status Report is meant to describe a player’s anticipated availability for the club’s next game.
In practical terms, the team has not said the player will definitely play or definitely sit. The designation communicates uncertainty, not a prediction with a stated numerical probability.
How Questionable compares with Out and Doubtful
| Status | NFL definition | What it conveys |
|---|---|---|
| Out | “Will not play.” | The player is not expected to play. |
| Doubtful | “Unlikely to play.” | The player is unlikely to be available, but the label is not an absolute ruling. |
| Questionable | “Uncertain if player will play.” | The team has not established whether the player will be available. |
The NFL removed the former “Probable” category. Its policy does not define these statuses as percentage bands, so “Questionable” should not be translated into a specific chance of playing unless a separate source provides an attributed estimate.

Does Questionable mean the player will play?
No. It means the team is uncertain, so the player could play or miss the game. The designation alone does not settle the outcome. Check the latest report for that game: the NFL says a change in a player’s condition after the initial Game Status Report must be reported.
Does Questionable tell you whether the player practiced?
No. Practice participation and game status answer different questions. The Practice Report covers reported injury status and participation during the practice week; the Game Status Report covers anticipated availability for the next game.
Rank #2
A player may need to appear on the practice report even when the club is certain he will play. Under the NFL policy’s example, that player would not be listed on the Game Status Report. Conversely, “Questionable” by itself does not tell you whether the player missed practice, practiced on a limited basis, or followed another participation pattern.

Deadlines depend on the season and game schedule. For the 2026 regular season, the NFL’s Important Dates page lists practice reports on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday for a Sunday game, with the Game Status Report due Friday. If a player’s condition changes after the initial filing, the change must be reported. Consult the latest report for the relevant game rather than treating the initial designation as final.
