Animal Crossing: New Horizons can give players practice with reading and language, basic numerical thinking, planning, creative design, digital navigation, and social communication. Research has documented players’ reported learning experiences, but it does not show that every player acquires these skills or that the game alone causes measurable learning.
What the research can—and cannot—tell us
A 2022 study of Animal Crossing: New Horizons analyzed 1,000 Twitter comments and conducted communicative interviews with five gamers and one family member. The authors identified reported learning connections across literacy, multilingualism, mathematical skills, digital competence, social skills, citizenship, entrepreneurship, and cultural awareness. The method captures experiences people described; it was not a controlled test of skill gains across a representative group of players. The study’s percentages refer to the share of comments coded in each category, not the share of players who learned a skill. In the 1,000 comments analyzed, 86.3% were coded as showing some kind of learning, and 68.5% were coded for citizenship competence. The remaining reported categories included multilingual competence (9.2%), personal, social, and learning-to-learn competence (5.3%), literacy (3.8%), digital competence (3.1%), entrepreneurship (2.4%), cultural awareness and expression (2.4%), and mathematical, science, technology, and engineering competence (0.6%). These are comment-coding results, not test scores or learning rates.
Skills players may practice
Reading and language
Players read character dialogue, messages, letters, and other in-game text. Following conversations and interpreting messages may provide opportunities to practice reading and encounter vocabulary in context. The 2022 study recorded comments associated with literacy and multilingual competence; it does not establish how much players’ reading ability or language proficiency changed.

Numbers and everyday choices
Buying, selling, collecting, and managing in-game resources can prompt players to compare quantities and think through choices. These activities offer concrete examples for an adult to discuss, such as what a player can afford or how different choices affect available resources. Mathematical competence was coded in just 0.6% of the analyzed comments, so the evidence does not support presenting the game as a formal financial-literacy course.
Planning and persistence
Players can set their own goals and work out steps toward them, creating a reason to plan, keep track of progress, and persist. The study includes personal, social, and learning-to-learn experiences among its reported categories. That supports describing planning as a possible gameplay opportunity, not a guaranteed outcome for every player.

Creativity and digital navigation
Using the game’s tools to design spaces and express ideas can give players room for creative choices. Navigating menus and digital features may also offer practice using an interactive digital environment. The study identified digital competence and cultural awareness and expression in player comments, but its qualitative evidence does not measure how much those abilities improved.
Social communication and citizenship
Players can communicate through the game’s social features and shared play. Nintendo has described family communication as an original design aim, including through letters, bulletin-board messages, and conversations with animal characters. That is evidence of design intent, not independent proof of an educational effect. Nintendo’s developer interview discusses that intent.

A separate 2025 qualitative study reported that collaborative play helped interviewed children aged 9–12 meet socializing needs and ease isolation challenges during COVID-19. Its finding is specific to those children and that pandemic context; it should not be generalized to all players or situations. Read the 2025 study.

If a child is playing, an adult can connect ordinary game decisions to a short conversation or offline activity. Keep the focus on the skill being explored rather than treating the game as a substitute for instruction.

- Reading: Invite the player to read a message or character dialogue aloud, then explain what it means in their own words.
- Math: Ask the player to compare quantities or plan a purchase using the amounts shown in the game.
- Planning: Have the player name a goal, describe the next steps, and check what they have completed.
- Design: Ask what they wanted a space to communicate and which choices helped express that idea.
- Collaboration: Co-play or talk about a shared decision, including how players can communicate and make room for one another’s ideas.
These are practical ways to draw attention to skills the game may invite players to use; the cited studies did not test these activities as lesson plans.
