Snap share shows how often a wide receiver is on the field; route participation shows how often he runs a route on team dropbacks; target share shows what portion of the team’s pass attempts go to him. Read together, they describe opportunity and deployment—not receiving skill, target quality, or a guarantee of future production.
What each metric measures
Snap share: time on the field
Snap share is a player’s offensive snaps divided by the team’s total offensive snaps. It helps show how broadly a player is deployed, but it combines different kinds of plays: a snap could involve a route, a block, or another assignment. A high snap share does not mean the receiver runs a route on every snap.
Route participation: access to passing plays
Route participation measures how often a player runs a route when the team drops back to pass. StatRankings defines it as the percentage of team dropbacks on which the player runs a route. It narrows the view from all offensive snaps to passing-play involvement. The provider’s page, last updated October 3, 2026, says its dropback denominator includes quarterback scrambles, excludes plays negated by penalty, and counts games missed in its player calculation: StatRankings’ route-participation methodology.
Target share: allocation of pass attempts
In the cited glossary, target share is a player’s targets divided by the team’s pass attempts. It indicates what fraction of the team’s passing volume is directed toward the receiver; it is not a share of routes. Since the denominator is team attempts, the same percentage can produce different target totals on teams that throw different amounts.

The NFL-hosted training glossary defines a wide receiver as a player who receives passes from the quarterback and runs pass routes while trying to evade defenders. These three usage rates add detail about how that role is deployed, but they do not measure the player’s complete contribution.
How to read the three rates together
Read them as a sequence: snaps → routes → targets. Each step answers a different question, and a gap between steps is a clue to investigate rather than a definitive explanation of coaching intent.

| Pattern | What it may indicate | What the rates do not establish |
|---|---|---|
| High snap share, high route participation, high target share | The receiver is broadly deployed, runs routes on many passing plays, and receives a large slice of team targets—a strong opportunity role. | Target quality, catchability, route value, future stability, or the team’s total passing volume. |
| High snap share, lower route participation | The player is often on the field but may be used for blocking, run-oriented situations, or formations in which he does not run a route. | The exact assignment or formation explanation; that requires play context. |
| High route participation, modest target share | The player runs routes on many passing plays but receives a smaller share of attempts. Running a route does not guarantee a target. | Why targets go elsewhere, or the effects of quarterback decisions, coverage, route design, and target quality. |
| High target share, low snap or route volume | Targets may be concentrated when the player is involved, but a high percentage on limited opportunities can be fragile. | Whether the role is stable or will expand; check raw routes, targets, and sample size. |
These are interpretation guides, not official role labels or universal cutoff rules. The rates alone cannot establish that a player is a starter, slot receiver, or “alpha.”
Why denominators and team volume matter
Route participation and target share use different opportunity pools: dropbacks for routes and pass attempts for targets. Dropbacks and attempts are not interchangeable, so compare figures only after checking how each source defines its denominator. StatRankings’ stated treatment of scrambles, penalty-negated plays, and missed games is one provider’s method, not a universal standard.

Percentages are relative to team totals. A receiver with a larger target share can still have fewer targets than one with a smaller share if his team attempts fewer passes. When estimating target volume, consider the share alongside expected team attempts; when assessing route involvement, consider the team’s dropbacks and the player’s actual route count.
Route counts can also depend on how they are charted or modeled. NFL Next Gen Stats described a tracking-based route-recognition model trained and validated on passing plays from the 2018 and 2019 regular and postseason. In that historical model, wideout routes were capped at the forward pass or 4.6 seconds after the snap, whichever came first; backfield routes were capped at the forward pass or four seconds. The model used separate wideout and backfield route categories. Those are details of that NFL model, not a universal definition of route participation across providers. See NFL Next Gen Stats’ route-recognition methodology.

How to compare receivers fairly
- Match the source and window. Use the same provider, season or game span, and denominator conventions for both players.
- Compare the underlying counts. Look at offensive snaps, routes and team dropbacks, targets and team attempts—not just the percentages.
- Check the team opportunity pool. A share is relative to the team’s volume, so note attempts or dropbacks when comparing target totals or route involvement.
- Account for availability and role context. For a player’s change over time, compare the same player across games or season segments and disclose missed games or denominator treatment where relevant.
- Keep opportunity separate from results. These rates show usage. To evaluate actual receiving output or efficiency, use separate production and efficiency evidence.
Small percentage differences are not automatically meaningful: check the counts and context, especially when the sample is limited.

Routes themselves are not equally likely to draw targets. NFL Next Gen Stats reported historical wideout-route averages for the 2018–19 seasons: go routes made up 22.3% of wideout routes and had a 10.8% target rate, while WR screens made up 3.4% of routes and had a 40.7% target rate. The same article reported target rates of 27.8% for out routes and 25.2% for slants. These figures use that article’s route model and describe those seasons; they are not current benchmarks for a receiver or team.

The contrast illustrates why route participation is not target share: being available on a route does not mean the player will be targeted, and route type is only one part of the context. The NFL Next Gen Stats article described its goal this way: “Real-time route classification enables us to contextualize the passing game in new ways.”
Quick Recap
What the metrics cannot tell you by themselves
- Receiving skill or efficiency: Usage rates do not show whether a receiver catches targets, gains yards, or creates value per opportunity.
- Target quality: A target count does not explain its difficulty, location, or likelihood of completion.
- Why a player’s usage looks a certain way: A snap-to-route gap can suggest different deployment, but the rates do not reveal assignments, formations, coverage, or coaching intent.
- What happens next: A role can change, and a high share on a small number of opportunities may not persist.
