The 2020 Nintendo “Gigaleak” was a reported online disclosure of development files—not an authorized release of games. Contemporary reporting described compilable code and assets associated with Super NES, Game Boy and Nintendo 64 titles. It also distinguished that July disclosure from an earlier, separate dump said to include console operating-system source code and internal presentations.
What the Gigaleak was
“Gigaleak” is the name commonly used for the 2020 disclosure reported on 4chan. Ars Technica’s contemporaneous account described a large collection of files that appeared online, including compilable code and assets associated with games for the Super NES, Game Boy and Nintendo 64. Ars Technica’s July 27, 2020 report is the basis for those descriptions.
These categories matter: development code and assets are not the same thing as a playable retail game, a prototype, console firmware or an internal presentation. The reporting does not establish that every file was authenticated or that the collection was complete.
How the reported disclosures differ
Ars Technica’s account described an earlier, separate dump that included source code for console operating systems and internal presentations. It treated that material as distinct from the July 2020 files associated with games. The available account does not justify combining the two into one confirmed release or assuming that every category of material appeared at the same time.

What remains unconfirmed
The cited reporting does not establish the original access path, identify a responsible actor, or provide a complete inventory of the files. Nor does the available official Nintendo guidance amount to a specific public confirmation about this incident. It is therefore more accurate to describe the contents as files reported to have appeared online than to present the entire collection as independently verified.
Nintendo’s general position on leaked or unauthorized material
Nintendo’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ is general policy guidance, not an incident statement about the Gigaleak. Nintendo says its IP Enforcement Program aims to reduce the availability of unauthorized copies, circumvention devices or software, and counterfeit products. The FAQ also identifies software source code among the intellectual property Nintendo protects, stating: “These include various copyrights in Nintendo’s software source code, executable code, game visual display, game music, game characters, product packaging, game manuals and labels, artwork and publications.”
