The 2024 Game Freak breach did not establish an official origin story for Pokémon. After the intrusion, a purported creation-myth draft circulated online describing primordial chaos, an egg and Arceus’s birth—but the available reporting does not authenticate the document or show that it is canon. Game Freak’s confirmed notice concerned unauthorized server access and exposed employee-related personal information.
What Game Freak confirmed about the breach
Game Freak, the developer of Pokémon, said a third party accessed one of its servers without authorization in August 2024. The company announced the incident on October 10, 2024. Its notice listed names and company email addresses exposed in 2,606 cases involving employees and associated workers, including former employees and contractors. Game Freak’s October 10 notice did not authenticate or discuss a Pokémon creation-myth document.
Game Freak said it had rebuilt and inspected the server, and that it would strengthen security measures to prevent a recurrence. That is the company’s stated response; the notice does not establish the provenance or status of the lore material that circulated separately.
What the purported creation story says
In an October 15, 2024 report, VICE described a translation circulated by the leak account Centro as an account of the Pokémon universe’s origin. The reported text describes primordial chaos, an egg, and the birth of Arceus. VICE’s coverage presented leak details as speculative, not as definitive confirmation from Game Freak.

#1 Best Overall
Know Your Meme’s October 2024 explainer reproduces a short excerpt and notes related themes in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. That resemblance is not evidence that the circulated file is authentic or that its text is official canon.
Is the leaked Arceus story official Pokémon canon?
That has not been established. Game Freak’s public notice confirms the server breach and personal-data exposure, but it does not verify the creation-myth file. The secondary accounts describe a purported draft and an attributed translation; they do not provide company confirmation of its authenticity, completeness or canonical status. No verified statement from a named Pokémon representative in the cited coverage authenticates the story.

- The Pokémon TCG: Pokémon Day 2026 Collection includes 1 foil promo card featuring Pikachu with a Pokémon Day stamp.
- This also comes with 1 Pokémon coin.
- You will also receive 3 Pokémon TCG booster packs.
- Booster Packs May Vary from those pictured.
It is therefore safest to describe it as a purported leaked creation-myth draft. The available evidence does not justify presenting its details as the definitive or official origin of Pokémon’s universe.
Three different meanings of “Pokémon’s origin”
| Meaning | What the sources establish |
|---|---|
| Real-world development | TIME’s February 26, 2024 feature reports that Game Freak developed the original Game Boy game around collecting and trading creatures, and spent nearly six years on it, including planning. Junichi Masuda told TIME: “So our original idea for Pokémon wasn’t ‘We want to make an RPG’—instead, it was ‘We want to trade.’” TIME’s development-history feature provides context about the games’ creation, not the fictional universe’s cosmology. |
| Mythology in released games | Pokémon Legends: Arceus touches on related themes, according to Know Your Meme’s October 2024 explainer. That connection does not authenticate the leaked text. Know Your Meme’s account is secondary coverage, not a Game Freak statement. |
| The circulated draft | VICE reported a translation attributed to Centro after the breach. The reviewed reporting does not establish the original file’s provenance, completeness or canonical status. VICE’s October 15 report treats the leak claims cautiously. |
Why “Nintendo hack” needs qualification
The title’s shorthand can suggest Nintendo confirmed the incident, but the primary confirmation cited here came from Game Freak, the Pokémon developer. BleepingComputer’s October 14, 2024 coverage likewise distinguished the confirmed employee-data breach from game-data claims the company had not acknowledged. BleepingComputer’s report is useful context, but it does not turn the purported lore document into an authenticated release.
