The late-January 2021 “Azyr stirs” teaser offered a cryptic Warhammer clue, not a confirmed announcement of Total War: WARHAMMER III. At the time, fans and contemporary coverage debated whether it pointed to a new Warhammer II expansion or the next game. The clip gave no release date, and its dwarf connection was speculation rather than confirmation from Creative Assembly.
What was in the January 2021 teaser?
Creative Assembly’s short teaser circulated on Reddit before appearing on YouTube, according to Sieeka Khan’s January 30, 2021 account for Tech Times. It centered on the words “Azyr stirs” and an astronomer studying the sky.
Khan described the figure as an astronomer at an astrolabe in Altdorf, examining Grungi’s Baldric, a constellation associated in the report with dwarfs. Jim Hargreaves’s February 1 coverage for TheSixthAxis also described a mage astronomer in Altdorf observing a cryptic constellation, and attributed the phrase “Azyr stirs…” to Total War’s January 29 social post. The imagery and wording were clues, but the teaser did not explain what they meant.
Warhammer II DLC or Warhammer III?
In late January 2021, both possibilities remained open in fan discussion reported by Tech Times and TheSixthAxis. The teaser itself did not identify a game, expansion, release window, or date.

| Interpretation at the time | What seemed to support it | What was not established |
|---|---|---|
| Total War: WARHAMMER II DLC | The teaser could have been setting up another addition to the existing game, a possibility raised in both contemporary reports. | No expansion was named or confirmed by the teaser. The dwarf association was a fan reading of the constellation, not an official explanation. |
| Total War: WARHAMMER III | Some fans read the cryptic clip as a hint of the next main game, also discussed in both reports. | The teaser did not name the sequel or announce a release date. |
Hargreaves also raised other speculative readings, including a possible connection to Age of Sigmar, and discussed Azyr as the Lore of Heavens. Those ideas were interpretations, not confirmation of the teaser’s intended subject. The safest reading at the time was simply that Creative Assembly had published a Warhammer-themed mystery.
What later official coverage confirmed
Warhammer Community’s Warhammer Skulls 2021 article later identified Total War: WARHAMMER III as the third installment. It described Kislev facing the four Chaos Gods, named Katarina as commander of Ursun’s faithful, and introduced the Khorne character Skarbrand. This later announcement establishes the game’s identity and some of its setting; it does not prove that any specific interpretation of the January teaser was correct.

The official article linked to Steam and the Epic Games Store and discussed preorders in 2021. That is historical storefront information, not evidence of present availability, current retailer terms, or a particular physical edition.

The teaser relied on a compact phrase and visual symbols rather than a title card or explicit announcement. The constellation could encourage a dwarf-related theory, while the reference to Azyr invited broader readings tied to Warhammer lore. Neither made the intended announcement certain. Reddit was where the clip and discussion were reported to have surfaced, but community interpretation should not be mistaken for an official statement.
