That change in ratings is notable, but it does not prove every player concern has been settled.

Arrowhead’s October 5, 2026 update, Devoid of Liberty: 7.0.0, pushes the game’s ongoing story toward the Void, a region tied to the Illuminate threat. The update adds mutated enemies and support for operations in the Void, alongside technical and gameplay fixes. Arrowhead’s update notes describe the Wretch as a nimble enemy that can dodge and leap while attacking.

The update also opens access to all 300 security ranks and adds SEAF platoon support on Void planets. Among its gameplay adjustments is queued stim use: if a player presses the stim button but cannot use one immediately, the action can trigger once it becomes possible. The patch also lists multiple crash fixes and visual-effects optimizations.
In an August 12 announcement, PlayStation described Devoid of Liberty as a new frontier involving the Illuminate. The update’s release coincided with Helldivers 2 joining the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog for Extra and Premium members; catalog availability and membership terms can vary by region. PlayStation’s announcement quoted Arrowhead community manager Katherine Baskin: “We must venture into their haunted abyss, the Void, and liberate it back into Super Earth’s control.”

Why were players angry?
In May 2026, PC Gamer reported that Helldivers 2’s recent Steam reviews had fallen to “Mostly Negative.” Players cited unclear weapon changes, the perceived value of Warbonds, and communication from the developers. The report said Arrowhead promised clearer explanations of balance changes and described work on Galactic War progression, longer multi-week Major Order campaigns with branching outcomes, and improved rewards. PC Gamer’s report documents the controversy; it does not establish that every complaint was resolved.
The backlash is useful context for the current mood, but May’s rating is not the current Steam rating. Nor does a later improvement in Steam reviews establish universal satisfaction: storefront ratings reflect reviews on that platform, not every player’s view across consoles and PC.

On October 8, 2026, Steam displayed 86% positive among 4,060 recent reviews and 80% positive among 635,506 English-language reviews. These are a dated snapshot of Steam’s changing review totals, not permanent ratings or a measure of all players. Steam’s Helldivers 2 listing is the source for those platform-specific figures.

How big is the game, and how does co-op work?
Sony Interactive Entertainment reported more than 22.9 million players across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC as of August 9, 2026. That is a cumulative player count, not a count of people currently playing or a sales figure. Sony’s announcement gives the date and platform scope.

Helldivers 2 is an online third-person co-op shooter. Squads can have up to four players, crossplay is available and can be disabled, and an internet connection is required, according to Arrowhead’s FAQ. Steam lists February 8, 2024 as the PC release date and says the Steam version requires a PlayStation Network account. Arrowhead’s support FAQ has the co-op details; check current regional storefronts for supported platforms, since the FAQ’s platform list omits Xbox Series X|S even though newer official announcements and Steam’s announcement feed include it.
