It was not a promise of identical controls or a PC-versus-console matchmaking pool: console players got selectable console control presets, and Riot’s later regional announcement says console and PC players cannot join one another’s matches.
What Riot wanted the console beta to test
Riot described the limited beta as its first live-service console game effort. The stated goal was to learn how best to serve console players while delivering the quality it provided to PC players. Riot focused on ninth-generation hardware—PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S—rather than attempting a broad launch across older consoles.
In its August 9, 2024 availability update, Riot wrote: “We wanted to ensure the best translation of VALORANT from PC to console, and focused specifically on Gen9 devices, such as PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, to do so.” At the time, Riot listed the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan, and Brazil as available beta regions “for now,” with possible expansion. Those were launch-era regions, not a definitive list of current eligibility. Riot’s beta availability announcement
How the launch beta was adapted for console
The initial beta offered a deliberately limited set of modes and maps, plus console-oriented onboarding and practice features. Riot’s Patch 8.11 notes listed the following launch selection:

Controls were console-specific, not simply PC controls on a controller
Patch 9.0 added a control-preset choice on first boot, before the tutorial. Players could select VALORANT-specific controls or a “TRADITIONAL console FPS” preset, then customize their controls later in Settings. The traditional preset is therefore a console control option; it does not mean the console version uses the same control scheme as the PC version.

For the literal question, “Can I play VALORANT against my friends who play on a different platform than I do?” the answer depends on the platforms. Riot’s September 24, 2026 announcement for Australia and New Zealand says PlayStation and Xbox console players can play together, but console players cannot join PC matches. It also says account progression—including Battlepass progress, Agents, and purchased skins—carries between console and PC. These cross-play, separation, and progression details are stated in that regional announcement, so check Riot’s local information for other regions. The announcement further says a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass subscription is not required to play VALORANT in Australia and New Zealand. Riot’s Australia and New Zealand announcement
