Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A backup with excellent rate stats may barely play; a goalie who starts often may help wins and saves but hurt goals-against average (GAA) or save percentage (SV%). The right claim depends on your league and roster—not on a single stat.
Start with your league’s goalie rules
Open your league settings before comparing players. Confirm whether scoring is category-based or points-based, which goalie stats count, how they are weighted, how many goalies you can start, and whether the league has minimum or maximum appearance rules. Common categories include wins, GAA, save percentage (SV%), and shutouts, but leagues can use different categories or custom point formulas. NHL.com’s fantasy hockey glossary explains common terms; your league’s settings determine what actually matters.
How a minimum goalie appearance rule changes the decision
A minimum can make it necessary to start enough goalies to qualify for the week’s results. Without a minimum, a manager may be able to protect strong GAA and SV% by using very few goalies; Yahoo notes that even one shutout could automatically win or tie those categories when no minimum applies. Check your league’s rule rather than assuming it matches another platform’s default. Yahoo’s minimum goalie appearances help page explains its platform’s approach.
Estimate the goalie’s workload from his role
Determine whether the candidate is the team’s regular starter, part of a genuine tandem, a backup, or in an uncertain role. A tandem means two goalies share work for one team. A tandem can produce useful starts, and owning both goalies may help cover more of the team’s appearances, particularly in leagues with appearance caps. But more starts are not automatically better: evaluate the volume alongside efficiency and matchups. NHL.com’s glossary recommends balancing start volume, including wins and shutouts, against GAA and SV% in standard-category leagues.

Look for a role trend, not just a name or a few recent results. A short run of strong games does not by itself establish that a backup has taken over the crease or that his performance will persist. Consider recent and season results together with expected playing time.
Match the player to your scoring format
In a category league, ask which categories the goalie can realistically help you win and what risks his starts introduce. In a points league, apply your league’s actual scoring weights rather than assuming that a win, save, or goal allowed has the same value as in another format.

- Wins and shutouts: More starts create more opportunities, but a goalie’s team and opponent affect those chances.
- Saves: The value depends on your scoring rules; high volume alone does not establish strong overall value.
- GAA and SV%: These measure efficiency, so additional starts can help or hurt depending on performance.
- Custom points: Use the league’s scoring table to compare likely contributions, not a generic ranking.
There is no universal target for GAA, SV%, or share of starts that makes a waiver claim correct. Compare the available goalies with each other in the context of your format.
Check the schedule and likely matchups
Use the dates in your actual scoring period to see how often the goalie’s team plays, who the opponents are, and whether the candidate is likely to start those games. A favorable schedule is useful only if the goalie is expected to play. NHL.com describes streaming as adding and dropping players to exploit schedule opportunities or favorable matchups; it can be demanding, so weigh the potential gain against roster space and transaction limits. NHL.com’s glossary discusses streaming and goalie management.

Compare available goalies across the same factors
When several goalies are on waivers, compare them on the factors that affect your league outcome rather than sorting by one season statistic.
| Factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Expected starts | Starter, tandem share, backup, or uncertain role; distinguish confirmed starts from projections. |
| Scoring fit | Likely contribution to your league’s categories or point formula, including the trade-off between volume and efficiency. |
| Team and matchups | Team context, opponents, and game dates during your scoring period. |
| Performance | Season and recent results interpreted alongside workload and role. |
| Roster cost | Which player you would drop, available goalie slots, add limits, and weekly lineup lock. |
| Claim cost and timing | Waiver priority or budget, deadline, and when an addition becomes eligible to count. |
Verify the claim process and start news
Before using priority or budget, check whether the player is a free agent or on waivers, when claims close, how priority or bidding works, whether move limits apply, and when a successful claim takes effect. These rules are league-specific. For example, CBS’s 2026–27 free fantasy hockey rules describe that platform’s claim queue, priority, and timing; they do not establish the rules for Yahoo or a private league.

A practical waiver checklist
- Read your league’s goalie categories or point weights, appearance rules, goalie slots, and transaction limits.
- Identify the candidate’s likely role and expected starts; separate confirmed information from projections.
- Compare workload and performance with the scoring value and risk of each goalie start in your format.
- Check opponents and game dates for your scoring period, then verify the likely starter near lineup lock.
- Decide whether the expected value justifies the roster spot, drop, waiver priority, or budget.
- Confirm the claim deadline and when the addition can count in your league.
