Before buying a 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD, check that your computer or console supports its NVMe interface, length and clearance; compare the exact 2TB model’s rated performance, heatsink, endurance and warranty; and treat advertised speeds as maximum sequential ratings, not a promise of faster game performance. For PS5 expansion, Sony recommends at least 5,500 MB/s sequential read and requires an effective cooling structure that fits the drive bay.
1. Confirm that the drive fits your system
M.2 describes a physical form factor; it does not by itself mean a drive will work in a given slot. Check the documentation for your exact motherboard, laptop or console for M.2 NVMe support, keying, drive length, PCIe generation and lane support, and physical clearance. A slot that accepts M.2 SATA is not necessarily an NVMe slot. A compatible drive connected through a slower interface also cannot deliver the throughput of a faster link.
For PS5 expansion
Sony specifies an M.2 NVMe SSD with PCIe Gen4 x4 and Key M for PS5, with a supported capacity range of 250 GB to 8 TB. Listed lengths are 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110. The complete installed drive and cooling structure must fit Sony’s stated size limits: up to 25 mm wide and 11.25 mm thick, with separate above- and below-board thickness limits. Check the current PlayStation M.2 SSD installation requirements for the detailed measurements and installation guidance.
Sony recommends sequential read speeds of 5,500 MB/s or faster for PS5. This is platform-specific guidance, not a guarantee that every game will perform like it does on the console’s internal storage. Sony also says it cannot guarantee that every third-party drive meeting the stated specifications will work; contact the drive maker if you are unsure about a model or its cooling structure.

2. Check the heatsink and assembled clearance
Some drives include a heatsink; others require you to add a compatible cooling structure. For PS5, Sony says effective heat dissipation is needed, using a cooling structure such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet. The cooling parts can be built into the SSD or attached separately. Sony supports single- and double-sided drives, noting that single-sided cooling structures are easier to fit.
Check the dimensions of the SSD with its heatsink installed—not just the bare drive’s M.2 length. A heatsink or thermal pad that is too large can prevent the drive from fitting in the enclosure. If a drive’s built-in heatsink is included, follow the manufacturer’s instructions about whether it may be removed. For example, Seagate warns that removing the preinstalled heatsink from its 2TB Game Drive can damage the SSD; that warning applies to that model, not every drive.

- FAST PERFORMANCE: Gen4 performance at 5,000MB/s is 8x faster4 than SATA and 33x5 faster that hard disk drives
- SAVE MORE PHOTOS, VIDEOS AND MORE: Get up to 2TB of capacity for all your favorite files
- EASY INSTALLATION: Follow step-by-step instructions for easy installation and cloning
- BETTER THAN HDD: More durable and dependable than hard drives while generating less noise and heat
Seagate lists that model’s dimensions as 80.15 mm long, 24.2 mm wide and 10.39 mm high. Those measurements illustrate why checking the complete assembly matters; they are not standard dimensions for every 2TB SSD. Sony advises choosing another option or asking the manufacturer when the fit of a cooling structure is uncertain.
3. Compare performance for the exact 2TB model
Use the specification for the precise 2TB SKU, rather than assuming a different capacity or variant has the same ratings. The manufacturer examples below show why both read and write figures—and their scope—matter.

| 2TB model | Manufacturer-rated sequential performance | Listed endurance and warranty | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| WD_BLACK SN850P | Up to 7,300 MB/s read and 6,600 MB/s write | 1,200 TBW; five-year limited warranty | SanDisk product specifications |
| Seagate Game Drive M.2 SSD with Heatsink | Up to 7,300 MB/s read and 6,900 MB/s write | 2,550 TBW; five years | Seagate datasheet |
These are manufacturer-stated maximum sequential ratings, not results from a head-to-head test. Seagate says measured performance can vary with firmware, system hardware and configuration. Neither set of figures establishes how a drive will perform in a particular game, during sustained transfers, in random workloads or in a thermally constrained laptop.
For PS5, Sony cautions that game performance may not exactly match the console’s internal Ultra-High Speed SSD even when an expansion drive’s sequential read speed exceeds 5,500 MB/s. The sequential headline number is therefore a compatibility and specification point—not a direct forecast of load times or gameplay performance.

4. Compare endurance and warranty terms
TBW means terabytes written: a manufacturer’s rated write-endurance figure used in its product specification and warranty framework. Compare the number for the exact capacity and model. The two examples above list 1,200 TBW for the 2TB WD_BLACK SN850P and 2,550 TBW for the 2TB Seagate Game Drive. These ratings are not independent measurements of expected lifespan and do not predict when a particular drive will fail.
Read the warranty terms for the exact model and region, including any limit based on time or total writes. For a separate example of how limits can be applied, MSI states that SPATIUM M482 warranty coverage lasts up to five years or until the specified TBW is met, whichever comes first. That statement describes the M482 terms and should not be assumed to apply to other drives. The WD_BLACK SN850P and Seagate figures in the table are the terms stated in their respective manufacturer materials; consult those materials for the applicable conditions.

5. Make the final comparison on the full checklist
Once you have identified drives that fit your host, compare the factors that affect your actual use rather than choosing by the largest speed number alone:
- Compatibility: M.2 NVMe support, PCIe generation and lanes, keying, length and host clearance.
- Cooling: whether a heatsink is included or required, and whether the complete installed assembly fits.
- Performance: capacity-specific sequential and, where published, random ratings; use them as specifications rather than guarantees for games or other applications.
- Endurance and warranty: TBW for the exact capacity, warranty duration, regional conditions and any write-limit cutoff.
- Price per usable capacity: compare current offers only after confirming the competing drives are compatible and similarly equipped.
No current retail-price comparison or independent head-to-head benchmark is established here, so the cited examples do not support naming a universal best-value or fastest choice. Verify the exact SKU and its current regional specifications before purchase, since product variants and warranty terms can differ.
