Before paying, identify your exact hardware and operating system, ask the developer or publisher for official specifications, and use reports from similar PCs only as supporting evidence. Steam cautions that even computers at or near stated requirements can have launch or performance problems.
First, confirm what the listing does—and does not—tell you
Open the game’s Steam store page and check whether the requirements section is absent or merely incomplete. Do not assume that a “PC” listing supports every PC operating system. Steam says to check both operating-system support and hardware requirements; one does not establish the other. See Steam’s platform and requirements guidance.
Steam Deck, Steam Machine, or SteamOS compatibility labels are a separate clue, not a verdict for an arbitrary Windows desktop or laptop. PC Gamer reported on 13 July 2026 that some Steam pages showed compatibility information for those Valve platforms while other games remained unrated. Those labels do not replace hardware requirements for your own PC. PC Gamer’s report describes that time-sensitive rollout.
Identify your PC by exact model
Write down the processor, graphics processor, installed RAM, operating system and version, and available storage. Record laptop versus desktop for the CPU and GPU: similarly named parts can differ, and a broad label such as “Core i5” or “GeForce” is not enough for a meaningful comparison.

On Windows
- Open Settings > System > About to find the processor, installed RAM, and Windows edition/version.
- Open Task Manager > Performance and select CPU, Memory, and each GPU to see model names and memory details where available.
- Check available storage in Settings > System > Storage, or in File Explorer for the drive where you plan to install the game.
If you use macOS or Linux, note the exact operating-system version and verify that the game supports it natively or through the compatibility layer you intend to use. A Windows hardware comparison alone cannot establish OS or anti-cheat support.
Ask the developer or publisher for the missing specifications
Use the developer’s or publisher’s official support channel and ask for minimum and recommended specifications for the PC version. Request the specific details that determine whether your setup is supported:

- Supported operating systems and versions
- Minimum and recommended CPU and GPU models
- Minimum and recommended RAM and storage
- Required graphics API or GPU features, if applicable
- Anti-cheat restrictions or other requirements that affect your operating system or setup
Compare their answer with your recorded models, not just the component family or number. If you receive no answer, compatibility remains unconfirmed; absence of a published requirement is not evidence that a particular PC will run the game.
Use game-specific reports as supporting evidence
If official specifications are unavailable, look for tests or player reports of the same game on the same or closely comparable CPU and GPU. Check whether the tested machine used laptop or desktop parts, what resolution and graphics settings were used, whether the report reflects a recent game update, and whether it achieved the kind of frame rate and stability you want. Reports from dissimilar hardware or unspecified settings provide little basis for predicting your result.

Community comparisons can be confusing when they rely on a family name rather than exact models. A Steam Community discussion captures the question many buyers face—“How do I check if a game will run on my computer?”—but it is a reader discussion, not an authoritative compatibility test. Read the Steam Community thread as an example of the question, not as proof about your PC.
Steam’s own launch guidance notes that differences in hardware and software configuration can cause problems even when a computer is at or near a game’s requirements. That is why a comparable benchmark can inform a decision but cannot guarantee launch, acceptable performance, or stability. Steam’s troubleshooting guidance also discusses requirements, RAM, and driver issues.

Decide what “will run” needs to mean for you
Launching successfully is not the same as playing well. Decide whether you need only a successful launch, a particular resolution, a smooth frame rate, certain graphics settings, or stable play over time. A machine near minimum requirements may launch yet fall short of your performance target; Steam specifically warns that being at or near requirements does not rule out launch or performance issues.

A practical decision rule
- Lower uncertainty: the developer or publisher confirms supported OS and specifications, and your exact PC meets them for your intended experience.
- Some evidence, still uncertain: credible tests of the same game on closely comparable hardware look suitable, but official requirements or support confirmation are missing.
- High uncertainty: neither official specifications nor useful comparable tests are available, or the OS, anti-cheat, or hardware match is unclear. Do not treat the game as confirmed compatible.
