Most PS4 games work on PS5, but check the exact title, your console’s disc-drive status, and any upgrade or save-transfer terms before you buy. Sony says the overwhelming majority of its 4,000-plus PS4 games are playable on PS5; some are not, and compatibility does not guarantee that every PS4 feature will work as expected.
1. Confirm the exact game is compatible
Search the current PS4 games playable on PS5 list and check the game’s PlayStation Store page. Sony labels incompatible Store titles “Playable on: PS4 only.” The list can change, so check close to purchase rather than relying on a general claim that PS4 games work on PS5.
Sony describes more than 4,000 PS4 games as playable on PS5, but that is its stated catalog figure, not a guarantee for every game. Even a compatible title may have PS4 features that are unavailable on PS5 or may show errors or unexpected behavior.
2. Make sure the copy matches your PS5

If comparing physical and digital copies, base the decision on your console’s hardware, the exact title’s compatibility, and any edition-specific upgrade terms—not simply on the PS4 label.

3. Separate PS5 compatibility from a PS5 upgrade
A PS4 version can run on PS5 without becoming a PS5 version. Some games separately offer an upgrade to a digital PS5 edition; the terms may be free, paid, or time-limited and can vary by title or region. Check the game’s Store listing and Sony’s upgrade guidance before paying extra.
- Disc-based upgrade: You need a PS5 with a disc drive. The PS4 disc must be inserted each time you play the upgraded digital PS5 game.
- Digital upgrade: Check that the offer applies to the digital copy and account you intend to use.
- PlayStation Plus game: A PS Plus game is not eligible for an upgrade unless its listing says otherwise.
Do not assume that buying the PS4 edition includes the PS5 edition or that upgrade terms are identical across versions.

4. Check whether your save can move to the version you want
Sony documents ways to move saved data to PS5, including console transfer and other methods; active PS Plus members can also use cloud storage. Its saved-data transfer guidance explains available routes.
Moving a save onto the PS5 does not by itself guarantee that the game will carry that progress from its PS4 edition into its PS5 edition. If continuing a particular save matters, look for title-specific instructions before choosing an upgrade or version.

5. Verify controller and VR requirements
For supported PS4 games, Sony lists DualSense, DUALSHOCK 4, and licensed third-party gamepads as options, but not every controller works with every title. Check the game’s requirements if you rely on a particular controller or accessory.
Playing PS VR games on PS5 requires a PS VR headset, a PS4 Camera, and a Camera adaptor. Sony recommends DUALSHOCK 4 for the best PS VR experience; selected titles may require PlayStation Move controllers or support the Aim controller. Confirm the setup required by the specific game.

6. Set realistic performance expectations
Game Boost can give selected PS4 games higher or smoother frame rates, but Sony does not promise a boost for any particular title. Keep the PS5 system software updated, and try the PS4 game on your console before buying add-ons for it; Sony specifically advises players to check whether they are happy with the play experience first.

- Find the exact game on Sony’s current compatibility list and check its Store page.
- For a disc, confirm your PS5 has a disc drive; for a digital copy, confirm which account owns it.
- Read the title’s PS5 upgrade terms separately from basic PS5 playability.
- If you need existing progress, verify both the save-transfer route and any PS4-to-PS5 edition handoff instructions.
- Check required controllers, VR equipment, and any title-specific limitations.
