Before buying, check the controller maker’s current Switch 2 listing and firmware notes, then confirm the features and support terms that matter to you.
How to check whether a controller works with Switch 2
Start with the exact model and variant, not just the brand or a general “for Switch” label. Nintendo’s Switch 2 accessories guide identifies specific accessories and capabilities; it does not promise blanket support for third-party gamepads.
Look up the controller on its manufacturer’s current product and support pages. Confirm that the maker explicitly identifies that model as compatible with Switch 2, and check whether that applies to the connection method you plan to use:
- Bluetooth wireless
- A wireless USB receiver
- USB wired connection
Compatibility in one mode does not establish compatibility in another. Check the maker’s firmware notes and instructions for required updates or setup steps before you order.

Check the features you actually need
A controller may connect and play games while missing capabilities you expect. Verify each one on the exact model’s documentation rather than inferring it from basic compatibility.
- Console wake: Can the controller wake Switch 2 from sleep, or must you turn on the console another way?
- Remapping and extra buttons: Can you remap buttons, and are rear or extra buttons supported for the functions you want?
- Motion control and vibration: Check whether each is included and works in the relevant connection mode.
- Audio: Confirm whether the controller supports headphones or headsets, and how they connect.
- NFC and amiibo: If you scan amiibo, verify NFC support specifically; do not assume it from wireless compatibility.
Nintendo’s button-mapping FAQ names supported controllers, so do not assume Switch 2’s system-level mapping options cover every third-party model. As a first-party reference—not a feature list for third-party pads—Nintendo says its Switch 2 Pro Controller has a C Button for opening the GameChat menu, mappable GL/GR buttons, and an audio jack.

Confirm setup, charging, and everyday fit
Read the exact model’s instructions for pairing, wired use, and charging. Check what cable or receiver is needed, whether it charges through the dock or a separate charger, and whether the battery arrangement suits how you play. Nintendo notes that the original Switch Pro Controller can connect wirelessly to Switch 2 and charge through the dock with a USB cable; that example should not be taken as guidance for a third-party controller.
For comfort and practical use, consider the controller’s shape, weight, button layout, stick feel, and whether its controls suit your games. Product pages may describe adjustments such as stick sensitivity or vibration strength, but verify that the specific Switch 2-compatible model supports the options you want.

Check support, warranty, and return terms
Nintendo’s controller troubleshooting guidance directs users with third-party controller problems to the controller’s manufacturer. Before purchasing, find that maker’s current support page, firmware update history, and warranty terms. Also review the seller’s return policy, since retailer terms vary.
Use a model-specific comparison before ordering
If you are comparing controllers, record the details from each maker’s current documentation rather than comparing brand names or broad compatibility claims.
