Before paying for a used or refurbished PS5, verify that it works, inspect its condition and serial number, confirm you can use PlayStation services, and get the return and warranty terms in writing. If possible, test it in person and have the seller reset it before handoff. “Refurbished” can mean different things depending on the seller, so check who refurbished the console and who stands behind it.
Start with the seller and the terms
Check the seller’s ratings and feedback, and ask for the console’s exact model, its original purchase date or receipt if available, the reason it is being sold, and a list of what is included. Sony’s US PlayStation buying guide also recommends checking seller reputation.

Before you agree to buy, ask for the return window and warranty terms in writing. A private seller’s promise is not the same as a retailer’s documented return policy. Confirm who provides any warranty, when it starts, what faults it covers, whether you pay shipping, and what the repair or replacement process involves.
Ask for proof it powers on and works
Before travelling to see the console, request a recent video showing it powering on, displaying a stable image, connecting to the internet, and testing its buttons and ports. If it has a disc drive, ask to see a disc read and eject. Sony recommends video proof for these checks, but a video cannot show everything about image quality, overheating, or physical damage.

Whenever possible, test the PS5 in person before money changes hands. Connect it to a display and check image and sound. Test the HDMI connection, every accessible USB port, the controller’s buttons and sticks, and wireless connectivity. On a disc model, insert and eject a game disc and confirm it reads. Run a game long enough to notice unexpected shutdowns, instability, or unusual heat. These are practical checks, not a standardized Sony diagnostic or a guarantee of remaining lifespan.
Inspect the console, controller, and accessories
Look closely for cracks, impact damage, corrosion, signs of liquid exposure, excessive dust, and damaged connectors. Check that the serial number is present and legible. Sony flags broken seals and removed serial numbers in its buying guidance; its US PS5 warranty terms also list altered, defaced, or removed serial numbers and certain unauthorized service or opening among warranty exclusions. An intact seal does not prove that the console has no fault, and a serial number alone does not establish clean ownership.
Confirm whether the console is a disc or digital model and note its exact model generation. Check that the items advertised are present and working: controller, power cable, HDMI cable, stand or base, and any extras. Count only accessories you have actually seen and tested.
Confirm online access and a clean handoff
Connect the console to the internet and confirm PlayStation services work. Sony warns that a product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. Ask the seller to deactivate the console and relinquish access; if they cannot demonstrate service access or will not remove their account or control, resolve that before buying.
Recommended Free Tools
Ask the seller to back up any data they want to keep, sign out or deactivate as appropriate, and reset the console before transfer. Sony’s Canada transfer and disposal guide recommends backing up data and resetting the console before transferring or disposing of it. Confirm that it reaches the initial setup screen without asking for the former owner’s credentials. Reset instructions or menu paths can differ by region, so consult PlayStation support for the console’s location if needed.

Understand what “refurbished” means
“Used” generally means previously owned. “Refurbished” is a seller or program label; it does not, by itself, establish what work was done, who did it, or what recourse you have if a fault appears.
Sony’s US buying guide says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by Sony’s warranty, while separately stating that certified refurbished PlayStation products do include a warranty. Sony lists a certified refurbished PS5 Digital Edition slim model through US PlayStation Direct; stock and terms can change. A marketplace “renewed” label is not proof of Sony certification.
Warranty coverage and consumer rights depend on the country and the specific policy. Sony’s UK buying guide says third-party used products may not be covered and notes that this does not affect statutory rights under applicable law. Do not assume a US warranty applies elsewhere or that one seller’s terms match another’s.

When weighing multiple consoles, compare the features and protections rather than relying on the listing label. Sony’s guidance supports checking the seller, condition, operation, and disc drive when applicable. Its live US certified-refurbished listing establishes that option exists, but it does not establish a stable price premium or market-wide price comparison.

When to walk away or pause
- The seller refuses a reasonable demonstration or will not let you test the console before payment.
- The serial number is missing or illegible, or the console has damage that the seller will not explain.
- PlayStation services cannot be accessed and the seller will not resolve the account or console-control issue.
- The seller will not reset the console or it still requires the former owner’s credentials at setup.
- Warranty, return, or included-accessory claims remain vague or are not confirmed in writing.
