Stay out of the closed area and away from the cliff edge. Check the responsible land manager’s current alerts and signs, and use only a marked diversion or an alternative viewpoint the authority confirms is open. Do not cross barriers, follow informal paths, or assume the beach below a closed bluff is safe.
What to do when you reach a closure
- Stop at the barrier or closure sign. Do not pass it to reach a viewpoint, take a photo, get to the beach, or use a shortcut. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park says visitors must stay out of closed areas and away from unstable cliff edges, which can collapse without warning. [NPS]
- Read the notice for the closure boundary and route instructions. Follow a posted map or marked bypass only if the responsible authority identifies it as an authorized route. If no route is clearly authorized, turn back and contact the park, council, or coastal authority for current guidance.
- Check before redirecting to another viewpoint. Use an alternative only if the authority confirms it is open; another location may also be affected by erosion or weather. At Hōlei Sea Arch, NPS closed the original viewing area after finding cracks and instability, then opened a safer viewing area farther from the edge. That replacement was specific to the site, not a general permission to find another route yourself. [NPS]
- Keep away from both the cliff top and the base. Do not make a beach-level detour under an unstable bluff. Point Reyes warns that rocks can dislodge from above and strike people below cliffs; Hawaiʻi Volcanoes also warns of falling and drowning risks along its rough, wave-swept coast. [Point Reyes] [Hawaiʻi Volcanoes]
How to choose an official alternative
Closures can come with different options, such as an inland diversion, a linking trail, or a replacement lookout. Compare only routes the local authority identifies as open. Check the route description for distance and difficulty, accessibility, exposure to cliffs or surf, and whether the destination itself is confirmed open. The sources do not establish a universal ranking for accessibility or difficulty, so use the local route information rather than assuming an alternative suits everyone.
- At Jan Juc–Torquay, the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority directs users to inland and linking trails when unsafe coastal sections are closed. [Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority]
- The Wales Coast Path publishes location-specific diversion instructions, including inland routes around cordoned cliff hazards and replacement lines after collapse. Those directions apply to the named locations, not to other closed trails. [Wales Coast Path]
Stay on marked tracks and obey barriers. NSW National Parks recommends viewing from designated lookouts; Point Reyes warns that informal “social paths” can worsen erosion and create hazards for visitors and rescuers. A visible path—or other people using it—is not evidence that it is authorized or safe. [NSW National Parks] [Point Reyes]
Re-check conditions before and during the visit
Trail access and cliff conditions can change. Before setting out, check the official alerts for the exact destination and review relevant forecasts; check the signs again when you arrive. NSW National Parks advises visitors to check park alerts and forecasts, while the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority describes monitoring cliffs and trails as hazards develop.
