Shut down your PC, switch off and unplug its power, and don’t try to push, glue, or remove the loose piece. A detached trim piece, part of the cooler, and a component from the graphics card’s circuit board can look similar at first, but they have different implications. Photograph the piece and the card, identify the exact manufacturer and model, then contact the card maker—or your PC maker if the card came installed in a system—before attempting a repair.
What to do first
- Power down and unplug. Turn off the computer, switch off the power supply, and unplug the system before inspecting the card. Don’t handle a loose part while the PC is powered.
- Leave the card and piece in place. Don’t press the piece back into position, shake the card, use tape or adhesive, or remove the cooler. A loose part’s appearance alone doesn’t establish what it is or whether anything else is damaged.
- Take clear photos. Photograph the detached piece from several angles and the area where it appears to have come from. Include the card’s full manufacturer and model label, but avoid posting its serial number publicly.
- Find the right support route. Check whether the card is an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition, a board-partner card such as ASUS, MSI, or GIGABYTE, or a card supplied inside a prebuilt PC. Contact the relevant manufacturer or system maker and ask what to do before removing the card or cooler.
What might have come loose?
These are broad possibilities, not a visual diagnosis. The available official guidance does not provide a model-by-model RTX 4090 guide for identifying loose parts, so send photos to the manufacturer or a qualified repairer rather than relying on appearance alone.
Shroud or trim
A piece of the outer shroud may be cosmetic, but that cannot be assumed without identifying the part and checking that it has not affected the fans or cooler. Do not glue it back on: no model-specific adhesive repair method is established, and an improvised repair could complicate inspection or service.
Heatsink or cooler assembly
A detached section of the heatsink or cooler is a more direct reason to stop using the card until it has been assessed. NVIDIA Support describes fan and heatsink replacement as difficult and warns that excessive force during heatsink removal can damage the GPU. Don’t disassemble the cooler to investigate unless the manufacturer or a qualified repairer instructs you to do so.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
PCB-mounted part
If the loose piece may be an electronic component from the circuit board, treat the card as needing professional inspection. ASUS support documentation lists detachment or absence of PCB components among examples of damage that can affect warranty service. That guidance does not determine whether a particular claim will be accepted.
Is it safe to keep using the card?
There is no universal answer based only on “a piece came loose.” The part, exact card model, and condition matter, and the available official sources do not establish that any specific loose RTX 4090 piece is safe to operate with. The prudent course is to leave the card unplugged until the manufacturer or a qualified repairer has identified the part and advised you.

If the computer was running when the piece came off, shut it down rather than continuing to test the card. Don’t run a game or stress test to see whether it still works; operation does not identify the part or rule out damage.
Contact the company responsible for your card
Use the manufacturer or system maker’s support route, not a generic RTX 4090 repair assumption. Send the complete model name, photos of the loose piece and its apparent location, purchase documentation if available, and a short description of when you noticed it. Ask whether they want the card returned and whether you should remove it from the PC. Get instructions before taking off the cooler.

- NVIDIA Founders Edition: NVIDIA’s warranty page lists the RTX 4090 Founders Edition. NVIDIA directs owners with a problem to its support team; if the card came as part of a system, NVIDIA’s guidance says to contact the system manufacturer for warranty service. NVIDIA warranty information and NVIDIA’s graphics-card fan replacement guidance explain the applicable route.
- ASUS: Check ASUS support and its graphics-card CID guidance. The CID page, last updated October 16, 2025, describes coverage for technical hardware issues during the warranty period and normal use, and says authorized service centers may offer CID part replacement for a charge. It does not determine the outcome for an individual loose-piece claim.
- MSI: Use MSI graphics-card support for warranty checks, online RMA or service, repair status, and contact options.
- GIGABYTE: Owners in the United States can use GIGABYTE’s support page for online repair requests, repair tracking, warranty inquiry, and e-support. Regional routes may differ.
Could the warranty cover it?
It depends on the card, where it was purchased, the region, warranty period, and the cause of the detachment. There is no universal warranty outcome for a loose RTX 4090 part.
For the Founders Edition, NVIDIA says its warranty covers manufacturing defects or hardware component failures for three years from purchase, subject to the product-specific warranty. It says an eligible defective product may be repaired or replaced, and excludes problems not specifically related to manufacturing defects or hardware failure, including misuse, negligence, and service by an unauthorized representative. Check the terms applicable to your purchase and region, and let NVIDIA assess the card rather than assuming the damage is covered.

Board-partner cards have their own warranty and service processes. In particular, don’t remove the cooler or attempt a repair before checking with the card maker: unauthorized service or damage during disassembly may affect eligibility. Ask support to confirm the applicable terms for your exact model and situation.

Ask the manufacturer about paid service or take the card to a qualified graphics-card repairer for identification and inspection. If the full cooler needs replacement, a third-party VGA cooler may be an option only if its manufacturer confirms compatibility with the exact RTX 4090 model and board design. A complete cooler assembly is not the same thing as a replacement shroud fragment, and the available NVIDIA guidance does not establish a universal RTX 4090 fit.

A graphics-card support bracket is not a repair for a detached shroud or heatsink. ASUS describes holders as support against sagging or bending caused by card weight; use one only if sag is a separate issue, not as a way to secure a loose piece.
