That timing is a community-derived rule of thumb, not an official Lunar limit. Start by checking Lunar’s live service status, closing the launcher and leftover game processes, then retrying; on Windows, Lunar’s official fix for “Downloading Assets” or “Downloading Textures” is to reopen it as administrator.
Identify which loading problem you have
The wording and behavior help distinguish an update hang from other launcher faults. Lunar documents separate remedies for several symptoms, so do not assume every stalled screen needs the same cache deletion.

How long should you wait?
After a major Lunar or Minecraft update, allow several minutes for files to download or unpack. Look for ongoing disk, CPU, or network activity: a changing progress indicator or active resource use is a reason to let the process continue. Avoid repeatedly force-closing Lunar while it appears to be writing files.
If the same screen remains unchanged for roughly 10–15 minutes and the problem returns after restarting, move on to troubleshooting. This benchmark comes from community reports about “Building Cache”, not a published Lunar service guarantee.

Try fixes that do not delete files
- Check Lunar’s live status. Open the Lunar status page and review its separate components, including Authentication, Metadata, Launching, Minecraft Session Server, Minecraft Launcher CDN, and Minecraft Textures CDN. A general online indicator does not rule out a problem in one dependency. The incident history can show whether a related disruption was reported. If a relevant service is degraded, wait for recovery before changing local files.
- Close Lunar and leftover game processes. Exit every Lunar window and make sure Minecraft is closed. On Windows, open Task Manager; on macOS, open Activity Monitor. End leftover Lunar, Minecraft, Java, or Java-w processes only when you can identify them confidently. Lunar recommends ending a lingering
javaw.exeprocess or restarting the computer for its separate “Failed to Extract Natives” issue; that is an adjacent official fix, not proof that a Java process causes every update hang. If you cannot safely identify the process, restart the computer instead. The Windows commandtaskkill /im javaw.exe /fis documented for that extraction error, but is not a universal update fix. See Lunar’s process guidance. - Check free disk space. Make sure the drive Lunar uses has room for downloaded and unpacked game files. Do not remove personal folders to make space until you have backed up anything you want to keep.
- On Windows, retry as administrator if the stage is assets or textures. Close Lunar, right-click its shortcut, select Run as administrator, and launch the same Minecraft version again. If it works, close Lunar and try a normal launch later; elevated access is a diagnostic retry, not a recommendation to always run the client this way. Lunar documents this procedure for “Downloading Assets” and “Downloading Textures.” For macOS and Linux, use the normal installed application and proceed to platform-specific support if permissions remain suspect; there is no equivalent menu path established here.
- Temporarily close potential conflicts. Exit other launchers, antivirus overlays, screen-capture tools, VPNs, traffic filters, and network-monitoring utilities, then retry once. If a security product appears to interfere, prefer a narrowly scoped legitimate exception or consult its documentation rather than leaving protection disabled.
- Test whether the issue is version-specific. Try another Minecraft version supported by the current Lunar launcher. If another version works, focus on the affected profile rather than deleting the entire client.
Check authentication and software interference
Lunar warns that external software designed to interfere with its client can prevent the launcher from loading or signing in. Remove or disable unauthorized clients, injectors, or “FPS boost” tools before continuing; such software may modify client files or network settings.
Review the hosts file only if you are comfortable editing system files
Lunar identifies hosts-file entries related to Mojang, Microsoft, or Lunar Client as a possible source of interference. Back up the file first, and remove only clearly relevant entries added by an unauthorized blocking or modification tool. Do not change unrelated system entries.

Save only the intended change and relaunch Lunar. If you are unsure which lines are safe to remove, stop and ask a knowledgeable person or contact support. See Lunar’s external-software guidance.
Reset the stored Lunar sign-in token if authentication seems involved
This step removes saved Lunar account sign-in data, so you will need to authenticate again. It does not delete your Microsoft account.

- Open the game settings directory for your operating system:

accounts.jsonfrom that directory. - Reopen Lunar and sign in again.
Back up worlds and personal files before cleanup
Before moving or removing any game or Lunar data, copy the files you care about somewhere safe. Include single-player worlds, screenshots, resource packs, shader packs, mods, and configuration files. Do not casually delete the entire .minecraft or .lunarclient directory.
Do not delete Minecraft folders until you have located and copied your worlds. A reinstall may fix Lunar, but it cannot recover a world that was deleted without a backup.

Do not assume Lunar and the standard Minecraft Launcher use the same game directory. Community reports describe isolated or version-specific Lunar game directories in some setups, but that behavior is not established as universal. Verify the active profile and locate your worlds before moving anything. See these community reports about directory changes and world and server-list concerns.

Use a visible repair or cache control first
If the current launcher visibly offers a clear cache, repair, or equivalent control, use that option for the affected profile. Labels and available controls can vary by launcher version. Lunar’s official guidance does not establish one universal cache-folder path or a guaranteed manual cache deletion procedure for every operating system. If there is no built-in control, back up personal files and move—not immediately delete—the relevant Lunar game or cache directory so you can restore it if needed. Capture logs before repeated cleanup, especially if the same files keep rebuilding.

Reinstall only after the safer checks
- Close Lunar Client.
- Uninstall Lunar through your operating system’s normal uninstall process.
- Restart the computer.
- Download a fresh installer from Lunar’s official download page; avoid third-party mirrors.
- Install the build for your operating system, open Lunar, sign in, and test one standard Minecraft version before restoring custom modpacks or third-party modifications.
The download page currently lists Windows, macOS, and Linux installers and states minimums of Windows 10, macOS Monterey, and Linux AppImage distribution. Requirements can change, so check the page for the current details. Reinstalling the launcher replaces the application; removing game or cache data can also remove downloaded versions, settings, or user data. Deleting .minecraft can destroy worlds and other personal files.
Decide whether the issue is local, version-specific, or a service problem

Lunar’s status page is live and its incident history includes prior 2026 reports involving vanilla launching, the store, and Minecraft session servers. A past incident does not establish the cause of a current hang; check the live component status when the problem occurs.
Contact Lunar support with logs if it still will not launch
After preserving your files and trying the relevant non-destructive steps, create a ticket through Lunar’s support process. Include the exact loading message, Minecraft version, operating system, whether one or every version is affected, when the issue began, and whether it followed a Lunar or Minecraft update. Add a screenshot and the time of a recent failed attempt if useful.
- Open Lunar Client and select the About tab.
- Choose Open in File Explorer/Finder.
- Attach
renderer.logor the file namedrendererto the ticket.
Lunar says replies may take up to 48 hours, though they may arrive sooner. Never include Microsoft passwords, access tokens, or private account information in a public post or screenshot.
