If you are in immediate danger, call 911. Otherwise, save the contact and verify the claim using contact details you find independently on the agency’s official website—not a number, caller ID, badge image, or link supplied by the person contacting you.
What to do first
- Deal with immediate danger. If someone is threatening violence, trying to force entry, or creating an immediate safety risk, call 911 when you can. ICE’s tip form also directs people to call 911 for emergencies.
- Stop the pressured interaction. For a suspicious call, text, or email, do not pay, share personal or financial information, click links, or continue responding to threats. The Federal Trade Commission advises hanging up when an unsolicited caller demands money or sensitive details, and its guidance on threatening scams says not to respond or pay.
- Verify independently. Do not rely on caller ID, an official-sounding title, an image of a badge, or a phone number supplied by the contact. Caller ID can be spoofed. Find the agency’s contact information through its official website and use that information to check the claim.
- Keep evidence if it is safe. Save messages, emails, voicemails, usernames, payment instructions, receipts, and the dates and times of contact. Do not put yourself at risk to collect evidence.
- Choose the reporting route that fits. A threat, a consumer scam, alleged immigration-services fraud, and a question about a court case may need different channels; see the reporting guide below.
Warning signs of an ICE or immigration-authority impersonation
The FTC says ICE and USCIS do not call out of the blue to demand money. Treat as a warning sign a caller who claims you violated immigration law, says your identity information is incorrect, demands a fee or immigration bond, or threatens arrest or deportation unless you pay or reveal information. The FTC also says these agencies do not accept gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers as payment. Read its guidance, “Scammers impersonate US immigration officers”, for these specific scam practices.
A number that appears to belong to an agency does not prove the call is genuine. The FTC warns that caller ID can be falsified. EOIR has also warned that scammers spoofed the immigration court’s phone number while posing as employees and requesting money. Its notice said EOIR personnel do not call individuals about compromised Social Security numbers or request money. That notice dates from 2022, so use the current EOIR website to confirm contact and case-information options.
Not every threat is a generic mass scam. In a release dated September 30, 2026, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York reported that a former NYPD sergeant pleaded guilty to falsely posing as an ICE official and threatening a victim and her family with further legal action and enforcement measures. The case shows that false enforcement claims can be used to intimidate a specific person; it does not establish how common such conduct is. See the DOJ release.

If someone claiming to be an agent comes to your home
Stay calm, do not run, argue, resist, or obstruct, and keep your hands visible. The ACLU recommends asking whether the person is an immigration agent and requesting to see identification through a window or peephole. If the person seeks entry, ask whether they have a warrant signed by a judge and request to inspect it through the window or under the door.
An ICE administrative warrant, including Form I-205, does not by itself authorize entry into a home without consent, according to the ACLU’s guidance. The legal effect depends on the document’s type and terms and the circumstances. Do not lie, provide false documents, or sign anything before speaking with a lawyer. These are general instructions, not advice for an individual case. If someone is forcing entry or poses an immediate safety threat, prioritize physical safety and call emergency services when possible. See the ACLU’s immigrant-rights guidance, updated August 4, 2026.
