If villagers won’t breed, first make sure both adults can collect enough food, then check that a valid, unclaimed bed is available for the baby with enough open space above it. Bed access and item-pickup behavior can vary by edition and version, so confirm which Minecraft edition you’re playing before relying on a specific breeder design.
1. Make sure both villagers get enough food
Villagers need to become willing to breed, and food must actually reach their inventories. The Minecraft Wiki’s village mechanics tutorial lists bread, carrots, potatoes, and beetroot as foods that can support willingness. It gives a threshold of 12 food points per villager: bread provides 4 points, while each of the listed crops provides 1.

For a manual attempt, throw food where both adults can reach it and watch to see whether they pick it up. The tutorial’s quantities for that threshold are:
- 3 bread per villager
- 12 carrots, potatoes, or beetroot per villager
If one villager does not collect the food, do not assume it has counted. Check that the villagers can get to the items and verify item-pickup behavior for your edition and version. A farm-assisted setup still depends on food reaching the villagers; seeing crops nearby is not proof that they have collected enough.

2. Provide a spare, valid bed
There must be an available bed for the baby in addition to the beds needed by the current villagers. A bed that has already been claimed by another nearby villager may not provide the extra capacity the pair needs. Check nearby beds and leave at least one unclaimed, valid bed available.
The Minecraft Wiki tutorial also says to leave two blocks of space above the bed so the baby can bounce onto it. Clear low ceilings or blocks directly overhead, and make sure the bed can be detected or reached as required by your edition’s mechanics.

3. Check your edition and the build’s assumptions
Java and Bedrock can differ in villager item pickup and bed handling. A breeder built from instructions for one edition or version may not behave the same way in another. Check that a guide matches your edition and game version before changing the build; pay particular attention to whether villagers can collect food and link to the intended beds.
Modern village mechanics are not based on doors. Mojang’s 2019 Village & Pillage Java release notes say: “Village detection is now based on beds, job sites, and meeting points instead of doors.” Advice that treats doors as the population trigger describes older mechanics, not the modern bed-based system.

4. Troubleshoot in this order
- Watch food collection. Give both adults the food amounts above and confirm they pick it up.
- Count available beds. Check for an unclaimed, valid bed beyond those needed by existing villagers.
- Clear space above the spare bed. Remove blocks that prevent the baby from bouncing onto it.
- Verify access and linking. Check the bed and food-access requirements for your specific edition and version.
- Discard door-based fixes. If the setup depends on older door rules, use guidance for the modern bed-based village system instead.
5. If they still will not breed
If food collection, spare-bed capacity, and bed clearance all appear correct, note the exact edition, game version, and what happens when you try. The available guidance does not establish every game-rule or server setting as a universal cause, so those details need to be checked against the version and environment you are using rather than treated as a guaranteed fix.
